Katajanokan Laituri

Helsinki’s former industrial Katajanokka waterfront is home to Katajanokan Laituri, a solid wood office and hotel building, and the largest mass timber construction in Finland to date. Designed by Helsinki-based architectural studio Anttinen Oiva Architects, the 23,000-square-metre landmark building is certified LEED Platinum. The completion of Katajanokan Laituri contributes to Helsinki’s goal of becoming a carbon-neutral city by 2030. Innovative Hybrid Flax Pavilion demonstrates use of CLT and flax fiber as alternative to conventional building techniques

The Hybrid Flax Pavilion demonstrates the application of an innovative wood and natural fiber hybrid construction system as an alternative to conventional building techniques. Wangen Tower is first multi-level and climbable structure to use self-shaped timber components

Wangen Tower is the first multi-level and climbable structure to use self-shaped, structural timber components. The tower’s design and build is based on research from the Cluster of Excellence “Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Architecture” (IntCDC) at the University of Stuttgart. The tower was created as an architectural landmark and a pioneering timber structure for the Landesgartenschau 2024 (this large-scale, annual horticultural show takes place in different regions of Germany — the 2024 edition is in western Allgäu). Tilburg University inaugurates the Marga Klompé building constructed from wood

The Marga Klompé building, designed by Powerhouse Company for Tilburg University in the Netherlands, has recently opened. Except for the natural stone facade, the 5000 square meter building is entirely constructed from wood. Lobis

The Lobis apartment building in Brixen underwent a fundamental transformation. The upper floor and attic of the four-storey building from the 1960s were demolished and rebuilt in solid wood construction. Spruce House & Studio by ao-ft sets an exciting precedent for infill sites in the UK

On an infill site in Walthamstow, East London, London-based practice ao-ft has completed a new-build home and self-contained studio. The Spruce House & Studio is the first completed project by the emerging design studio and highlights the practice's interest in sustainable construction and fabrication techniques.
