This house is conceived as an abstraction of the surrounding landscape and as a reinhabited ruin, built in reverse. It is organized along two axes, a pinwheel plan between two heavily wooded ravines, Stonewalls extending into the landscape evoke a ruin ‘found,’ then reinhabited with the program of the house. DIME (Detroit Institute of Music Education) Denver Studios and Live Performance Workshop (LPW) is a uniquely designed space for passionate musicians who desire a, professional career in today’s music industry. The new location’s layout needed to have separation and security to allow education during the day and studio and live concerts during evenings and weekends. Acoustic separation of studios and the LPW was paramount for these areas to perform like a music studio or concert hall. Kiva: / kēvə / n. A chamber built wholly or partly underground; used by Pueblo Indians for religious rites, political meetings, and spiritual ceremonies. The true origins of southwestern architecture can be traced back to 1200 AD when the Pueblo people constructed a city in the recesses of the Mesa Verde cliffs in Montezuma County. These 4-story buildings contained multiple dwelling units, community gathering spaces, and Kivas surrounding central courtyards.
