(S) Squares Al Sahil Mall

The design for (S) Squares Al Sahil Mall received third place in a global competition hosted by Al Salimi Real Estate Development in Saudi Arabia, bringing recognition to Cambodian architecture on the international stage. Developed by The Room Architecture and Design, the proposal reinterprets traditional Saudi architectural references for a contemporary retail destination. Its concept centers on a deliberate duality: an outward-facing commercial frontage along the main road and a sheltered central plaza that forms a more inward-looking public space. The building envelope draws from Najdi architectural archetypes, specifically rectilinear earthen massing, enclosed courtyards, and geometric mashrabiya screen walls, translating historic envir... Knox Bhavan reimagines challenging London brownfield site as contemporary low-carbon home

London-based architectural practice Knox Bhavan designed Threefold House, a new residential property in Teddington, south-west London. The low-carbon house is constructed on a brownfield site in a built-up area that was previously occupied by a disused warehouse. The contemporary home includes three courtyards and sits on a challenging 450-square-meter (4,844-square-feet) triangular plot, surrounded by other properties and a small car park. Edmund Sumner Caption The name Threefold House is a reference to the building’s “origami-inspired assemblage of geometrical planes,” explains Knox Bhavan. The site is bounded by a new 2.5-meter-high (8-feet-high) perimeter wall that recalls the former warehouse wall.... More

Niceto project sees the expansion and restoration of an old warehouse in Buenos Aires

On a site in the Palermo neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, Niceto by architect Ana Smud comprises the expansion and restoration of a former warehouse, abandoned house, and a courtyard in between. Javier Agustín Rojas Now accommodating offices, warehouses and exhibition spaces for a clothing company, the architect sought to preserve the existing courtyard as a central project core. The brand’s production and warehouse functions are located at the front of the site, a move that sustains the heterogeneity of the company’s activities. Lightfooted Villa BONH shows the beauty of simplicity

This ‘lightfooted’ villa by CAS Architecten shows how simple architecture, without embellishment, can nevertheless be beautiful. On a large parcel in Bonheiden, Belgium, the site fronts a busy road but becomes more tranquil towards the rear with views over grazing sheep and meadows.  Tim Van de Velde In response to the site conditions, the façade is largely closed towards the busy road but towards the rear is organized in a u-shaped formation around a central courtyard.  Walls are strategically placed in the courtyard area so that sleeping areas are not visible from living areas.   Tim Van de Velde The ground base of the villa is accentuated by a flat plaster that appears like concrete. The volu... More

Mira a showcase of traditional townhouse renovation

Casa Mira is a modern home in Valencia upgraded and adapted to the needs of a bustling family of five.  Mariela Apollonio The architect, Arturo Sanz,  sought to keep the traditional feel of the home intact whilst dramatically upgrading its functionality. The home is located in Benimaclet, once a rural village but via decades of increasing urban density now totally absorbed into the city of Valencia.  Despite its unity with the city, the area still holds a strong traditional identity and it was important to the client to keep that older feel and incorporate the historical memory into the design whilst updating the flow of the interior spaces to better accommodate its inhabitants as a cohesive family unit.  Mariel... Minimalist architecture of BOPORO House treads lightly on the land

Situated in a Belgian landscape of open fields and acres with some scattered barns, BOPORO House is pronounced in its architecture yet treads lightly on the land with its minimalist expression. Designed by TOOP architectuur, the house feels closed and subdued from the street. On the inside, however, the house opens up towards the surrounding fields, drawing nature into the house.   Credit: tim van de velde | architectural & interior photography Inside, living spaces are organized around a covered terrace. Window frames are minimal to invisible, thus reducing the delineation between indoors and outdoors. A continuous concrete ceiling/soffit further connects and unites outside and inside spaces.  Credit: tim van de... More

V60: A spacious house concept designed for two airline pilots

On a large site hidden off the main streets of Bangkok, WARrchitect designed a house for two pilots. Spending their working days in a confined cockpit and frequently having different travel schedules, the house is designed as a space where the two can spend time together without any tight spatial confines. Credit: RungkitCharoenwat With plenty of trees on the site, the house is divided into 3 zones: a living area, bedroom zone, and guest area. Green courtyard areas are inserted between these zones. Credit: RungkitCharoenwat To create a fluid sense of space, the three zones are not divided by interior partition walls. Instead, you walk from the interior of one zone to the exterior first and are then lead through the green of the... More
