David Adjaye’s Kwaeε serves as a temporal device at Venice Architectural Biennale

Kwaeε is the newest of Ghanaian-British architect David Adjaye’s earth-based social sculptures. On display at the Venice Architectural Biennale 2023, Kwaeε is both a viewing platform and a venue for programmed events. Michelle Äärlaht Kwaeε translates as “forest” in Twi (the language of the Akan people in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire). Made entirely of wood with a black-stained finish, the sculpture’s striking form and materiality embrace the qualities of its namesake. Kwaeε is designed in the shape of a triangular prism — a 13-meter-tall structure, with an area of 78 square meters, its construction, doorway, window, and platform are amalgamated in one single... SERPENTINE PAVILION 2019

Ishigami’s design takes inspiration from roofs, the most common architectural feature used around the world. The design of the 2019 Serpentine Pavilion is made by arranging slates to create a single canopy roof that appears to emerge from the ground of the surrounding park. Within, the interior of the Pavilion is an enclosed cave-like space, a refuge for contemplation. For Ishigami, the Pavilion articulates his ‘free space’ philosophy in which he seeks harmony between man-made structures and those that already exist in nature.Describing his design, Ishigami said: ‘My design for the Pavilion plays with our perspectives of the built environment against the backdrop of a natural landscape, emphasising a natural and organic feel as though it ha... Torsby Finnskogscentrum

01-March-2017 Bornstein Lyckefors Architects has transformed a modest school building in the deep forests of Värmland, Sweden, into a public museum celebrating the slash-burn agriculture Finns who settled in the very same forests in the early 1600s. By acknowledging the qualities of the original building, resources could be used to address communicative challenges stressed by the client. An outer facade was erected, signalling the new purpose of the building. Conceived as a wooden palisade this new layer defines an envelope within which the museum can continue to expand, converting class rooms into new exhibition spaces as additional funds are raised. In 2013, Värmland's Museum decided to invest in new premises for its branch Torsby... More

Francis A. Gregory Neighborhood Library

Adjaye Associates won an open competition to design two new neighborhood libraries for the District of Columbia. The brief called for the new buildings to be flexible, accessible, welcoming and inviting. Resonating with the Adjaye Associates designed Idea Stores in London’s Tower Hamlets, the libraries challenge the traditional closed typology, introducing a social element that establishes a strong urban and cultural remit. The sketch-like quality of the Francis A. Gregory Library suggests a woodland folly – a building that is a pavilion within Fort Davis Park. Views of the park are framed from within, while the exterior of the building both reflects and complements the dense composition of trees and the striking natural enviro... More

Venice Biennale 2012

Pictographs - Statements of contemporary architects For the installation I asked 41 contemporary architects to select images that refer to something important for their work or for them as practitioners. Architects whom I consider to be the most unique working today. Each architect creates a personal musée imaginaire by selecting one to ten images of different meanings and contents, depending on their own universe. Some collect images of memories, inspirations and atmospheres. Others talk by collecting images of analysis, explanations or manifestos. And yet others explain principles of their own architecture or simply show the things they like, consciously or unconsciously. It is about the visual world stored in the head of architects... More

National Museum of African American History

The landscape design for the National Museum of African American History and Culture situates the NMAAHC within the context of the Washington Monument Grounds as an object in a field, drawing the open, pastoral nature of the Washington Monument grounds through the Museum site. The design establishes the site as integral to the story of the museum with spaces that embody both a metaphorical and physical narrative. The experience of the site begins the narrative procession of the museum, with symbolic crossings over water through a landscape that is both continuous and sequential, layered around and through architectural spaces with the presence of water as a constant and dynamic companion throughout the journey.
