Drive-In OR Complex

EGM architects has completed a new, innovative complex of operating rooms on the roof of the visitor car park at the Reinier de Graaf Hospital in Delft. The unique drive-in complex offers rapid, easily accessible and welcoming care services. The complex responds to the growing demand for high-quality outpatient facilities in Dutch hospitals. Stijnstijl Fotografie Unique concept With the design of this drive-in operating room complex (OR), EGM has realized a concept that provides care in a new way. Everything is geared to getting patients back on their feet and giving them full control. Built directly on top of the existing visitor car park, the complex lets patients drive right into the operating room, so to speak. And, after their t... More

Delft City Hall and Train Station

Arriving in Delft is an unforgettable experience. From the outset, Mecanoo’s idea was to design a station that makes it clear to visitors that they have arrived in Delft. The station, in combination with the new city hall, sits atop a new train tunnel built in place of the old concrete viaduct that divided the city in two since 1965.Coming up the escalators, the impressive ceiling with the historic map of Delft unfolds (in collaboration with Geerdes Ontwerpen). When you look outside, you see the city and the old station as a contemporary version of Johannes Vermeer’s painting 'View of Delft’.A vaulted ceiling features an enormous historic 1877 map of Delft and its surroundings, connecting the station with the city hall. Within the stat... More

Delfland Water Authority

The Delfland Water Authority is located in a historical building on the Oude Delft: the Gemeenlandshuis. The monumental part was built in 1505 as a house for Jan de Huyter. The sandstone facade was unique for that time and it was one of the few buildings to survive the 1536 city fire. More than 100 years later, the house came into the hands of the Delfland Water Authority.Over time the Water Authority has been extended to include several adjacent monumental buildings, and in 1975 a new building on the Phoenixstraat was added. In 2014, the Water Authority decided to revise its housing strategy. The most important task was to make what was once a fragmentary complex, a whole and transform it into a pleasant, flexible working environment that... More

Municipal Offices and Train Station

In the city centre of Delft runs a railway viaduct that divides the city in two. The planned construction of a railway tunnel will remove this barrier. In its stead will be an expansion of the inner city including a park and a promenade. A station foyer in combination with offices for a thousand municipal employees will be built on top of an underground railway station. The inner city of Delft reflects its past. The campus of the Delft University of Technology on the edge of the inner city holds the promise of future development. The starting point for Mecanoo’s design is an interweaving of this history and the future. The result is a building where each elevation is designed in relationship to its context. The building is compact and it... More

Ewicon

‘Challenge the future’ is the motto of the Delft University of Technology, one of the most prominent universities in Europe. And that is exactly what the faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EWI) is working on. Here the future is challenged with numerous researches on finding alternative ways of generating energy. The EWICON (short for Electrostatic WIndenergy CONvertor) is a wind mill without moving parts, designed by Mecanoo. The technology is developed by the EWI faculty in a consortium with Wageningen UR and commercial companies in an economy-ecology-government partnership program. The breakthrough wind convertor transforms wind energy into electricity without the use of moving mechanical parts. The r... More

Campus of The National University of Science and Technology

Mecanoo has won the international competition to design the new campus of the National University of Science and Technology (MISiS), one of the leading technical universities of Russia. The 100-acre campus will be located in a new district of Moscow, where 300,000 new residents are expected over the next 20 years. The campus includes housing for 10,000 students and 3,000 academics, and is home to seven departments, several research institutes, a library, business center, hotel, sports park, cinema, cafes and shops. As a condition of the project’s financing by President Medvedev, construction must begin by year’s end. More images and architect’s description after the break. The National University of Science and Technology (MISiS) is o... More

Apartment complexes Kop van Oost

Kop van Oost lies between the Sontweg and Eemskanaal on the outskirts of the city of Groningen. Because the port areas were adaptively re-used into large-scale office complexes in the nineties, this former port area was designated to be developed into residential destination with the new name, Kop van Oost, or Eastern Head. Mecanoo gave the area a vibrant design with two apartment complexes, a broad promenade along the Eemskanaal and a public square. The first phase will be realized in 2009, the second phase follows two years later. More

Mekel Park - Campus Delft University of Technology

Right through the middle of the Technical University of Delft (TU Delft) used to run the bustling and broad Mekelweg (Mekel Way). This road was closed at the beginning of 2007 to make way for Mekel Park, 800 metres long and 80 metres wide. The TU Delft aims to transform its grounds into a University Campus, creating attractive surroundings for its international community of professors and students. This transformation is in keeping with the university’s goal of being recognized as a world-class institution for research and education. Formerly, the buildings of each different faculty and their respective parking lots sat like bulwarks along the road. Now, with the buildings located alongside the park, they illustrate their interdisciplin... More

Library Delft University of Technology

Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) commissioned Mecanoo to design a library that would be the heart of the university and give a face to a campus the size of a city district. The iconic library of TU Delft, designed with the digital transition in mind, still meets expectations more than two decades after its opening.A vast lawn opposite the Brutalist concrete auditorium is tilted at one point; the library slides into the resulting space underneath. A cone, the symbol of technical engineering, pierces the lawn and library, attaching them like a pushpin. Landscape, library and auditorium form a new unity becoming the preferred meeting place on the TU Delft international campus.Upon entering, visitors are drawn to the impressive wall of... More
