Sculptural clarity, enhanced by charred wood

In this contemporary residential project, the architectural strength emerges from contrast. A clear, light volume appears to float above the ground floor, while the dark timber façade beneath anchors the building within its green surroundings. The combination of clean lines, deep overhangs and vertical façade rhythm gives the residence a distinct, almost sculptural presence. Caption For the façade, Shodoshima by Zwarthout | Shou Sugi Ban was selected: charred and brushed Douglas fir with a deep black appearance and a rich, tactile surface. The elegant simplicity of forms, blending fundamental classics with elements of constructivism, defines the restrained and laconic appearance of LUCE. Particular attention is given to preserving the architectural style of the adjacent house, constructed in 1927 in the constructivist style. Magma Resort & Spa

The hotel complex is located between man-made and natural surroundings. Placed in a mild terrain near the village of Vourvoulos in Santorini, it is surrounded by traditional ’pezoules’, large areas of cultivated land that follow the altitudes and are formed with stone walls. The design approach attempts to create a built form that is created from the interplay between contradictory - complementary elements that reference the particular setting and the wider location. Organic shapes from black volcanic stones follow the curved contour lines creating a landscape that reflects the shape of the terrain.
