ALTA Architectes – Urbanistes has completed an ambitious office project on Chemin du Bois Harel, a road that marks the boundary between Rennes, an industrial city in north-western France, and the neighbouring municipality of Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande.  The Harel Wooden Office Complex (Bois Harel Tertiary Complex) takes a measured approach to office architecture, shaped by the dynamics of the site and its relationship to the surrounding landscape. The clients, a couple from the Paris region planning to retire in the south of France, approached the agency for their new home. The house will serve as their primary residence and also offer a seasonal rental activity. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all communications and design discussions with the clients were conducted via video call, which was an unusual but successful approach. The first in-person meeting occurred when the construction work began. The "Petite Ceinture" is an iconic heritage of Paris. It is represented by its bridges, tracks, station buildings, and auxiliary constructions: depots, ticket offices, and other service buildings. Some of these have already been restored, like the Gare de Montrouge-Ceinture and Gare de Passy-la-Muette, others are being prepared for restoration, and some are abandoned or have been demolished. For example, the main building of Grenelle Station at Place Balard has not survived—only archival photographs remain—but the ticket office/entrance building still stands. The Town Hall of Quedillac wanted to build a Cultural Center for the city. The main objective was to battle against capsularisation by providing a place where a diversity of publics could mix and gather around a common ground, thus fostering a social bond among the citizens. The new building would include a multimedia library, hall – coffee area, a youth space for teenagers and a childcare section for small children. The site is easily recognisable, with the presence of the “Cristal” building, commonly known as the “Barre des Arènes” block, which is 51.5 metres tall and 230 metres long, towering over the neighbouring buildings since its construction in 1961. Much like sports itself, sports facilities are always important sites of identification. Particularly in smaller towns like Cormeilles-en-Parisis, 17 km northeast of Paris, club sport plays a vital role in social life. The new sports center offers optimal training and competition conditions for local teams, amateur athletes and schools.With its silhouette, the design sets a striking mark, but nevertheless blends harmoniously into the loosely built residential area. The middle school on the outskirts of Bretenoux is situated off-street and its broad western front shapes a public square. The compact organisation of the single-story building is reminiscent of the regions medieval bastides. The surrounding cantilevered canopy made of dark carbonised wood protects the building from overheating by excessive solar radiation. This restrained, closed design contrasts with the generous, communicative interiors in which light-colored wood dominates.
