In-Land Living reimagines the American vernacular of the barn. Designed by S4Architecture in collaboration with AWP/AWILDC, the In-Land design adapts the traditional barn typology to create versatile, modern spaces that can serve as residences, art studios, remote workspaces, or a combination of uses. Fluid, organic and intuitive, The Mould House is a home that defies all limitations. The structure of the space is moulded into curves and contours--spaces are intertwined rather than separated, and the interplay between them is seamless. This project was a small home for a young couple and their three kids, located in a residential district near a station in the Nerima Ward of Tokyo. Houses on small plots of land are packed densely together in this area. The house we designed here has two large openings 2.4m high and 2.4m wide. Composed in layers, there is an atrium and courtyard beyond the large openings and further windows beyond the courtyard. This ensures the privacy of the residents while simultaneously creating a three-dimensional connection to the outside environment. The five-storey house is built on a very steep and narrow site with 180° views to the east. The existing house had no distinguishing architectural features, which the architect set out to correct. Adding to the appeal of the additions and alterations is the way the architectural design takes full advantage of the spectacular views that are on offer. The street façade was given a contemporary makeover with striking geometric elements made out of steel and concrete. The eastern and western façades are screened by the use of vertical louvers to allow sun control and degrees of privacy from adjacent properties.
