The project, winner of the competition helded by TELT, is conceived around the modular use of 27 shipping containers that form and articulate a volume with a large cantilever, wide windows and views of the landscape and the construction site. An essential architecture, reversible, recyclable, modular and quick to assemble. The building, which is proposed as an additional attraction for the territory, uses the geothermal energy intercepted in the excavationof the tunnel, involves visitors, from the very beginning of their visit, in the environment in which the worksite activities take place through a constantly evolving narrative. The Unitarian Universalist Society facility harmonizes with its natural landscape to provide reflective spaces for worship, fellowship, religious education, and administration. The congregation’s collaborative decision-making engaged all 300 members to inform a deeply considered, conscientious design. Its organic form and fundamental qualities– sustainability, accessibility, flexibility, efficiency, and austerity—reinforce the Society’s core principles. The rehabilitation project at Fort Des Moines reinvigorates an abandoned National Historic Landmark site. Six decrepit historic structures, including four army barracks and two equestrian stables, have been restored according to the National Parks Service historic guidelines. In doing so, a new, robust, and walkable neighborhood for low-income families has been created.
