Piraeus Tower

Piraeus Tower is the tallest structure at the port of Piraeus and the second tallest building in Greece after the Tower of Athens. With a height of 88 meters, its presence dominates the image of the port for five decades. The original tower designed by the architects I. Vikelas, G. Molfesis and A. Loizou was completed in 1975 but the interior has never been occupied, except for the first three floors. Being dormant since 1975, the City of Piraeus with a consortium of investors, transformed the inactive structure into a mixed-use tall building, of which PILA designed its new facade for the ‘rebirth’ of Piraeus Tower. They are also the designers of all interior common spaces accessible to office visitors and tenants. The awakeni... More

Sigurd Larsen designs a Cycladic island home with Escher-like stairways

In the Greek island of Kythnos, a cluster of white cuboid volumes sit on the hillside of a wild and grassy peninsula projecting out into an azure sea. The newly built construction, named Piperi House, was completed by Sigurd Larsen Design & Architecture and overlooks the Cyclades, an archipelago in the southern Aegean Sea. KKROM KKROM The design of Piperi House was inspired by traditional Cycladic villages, where differently-sized vernacular white cubes are stitched together by a labyrinth of narrow streets and whitewashed, stepped alleyways. “Like a crystalline sculpture cut out of a single piece of white stone, the monolithic volumes contrast with the dry landscape of burnt brown and green hues,” says Si... Private house in Paros

The property is located in close proximity to the sea, but due to the nature of its topography, there is no direct view of it. The area has low grass and shrub vegetation and no existing natural protection from the sun. These factors, together with the investor’s wish for a house larger than the permitted above-ground construction on the island, are fundamental in the development of the project idea. Caption The house is completely sunken into the ground and consists of 13 modules with a square-shaped plan that are combined in different ways to create a spatial organization. The modules are divided into residential units and patio units with the basic principle being that each residential unit has at least one adjacent patio. Th... More

St. Minas House renovation realizes the potential of its connection to the sea

Located near the small village of St Minas, Greece, and overlooking the Euboea Sea, this summer house renovation by Neiheiser Argyros opens up to the landscape in all directions. In particular, two large shallow concrete arches orient the main living spaces towards the sea.  Lorenzo Zandri From the approach road, the house appears to disappear into olive groves and wild pines forests but opens up across two stories to embrace the full extent of the seafront views. Extensive terraces around the house create a multi-level network of outdoor living rooms. Lorenzo Zandri The original house on the site was designed by Greek architect Nikos Hadjimichalis in the 1970s. While the original house was also focused towards the sea, by... More
