Many heritage renovations, villa or bungalow, tend to involve some degree of ‘blowing out the back’ to extend living space. The footprint of this two-storey heritage villa in Epsom, however, was capacious enough, and rather required the removal of a series of ground-floor building accretions that had been added to back of the house, and their replacement with a new dining room and veranda. Throughout the renovation, the aesthetic intrusion on the existing structure is slight, with the intention being to upgrade the home to contemporary living standards without compromising its charm. Waka Huia is a deeply personal renovation of a character villa on Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s harbour edge. Over more than forty years, its owner has filled the house with artworks, books, artefacts and family keepsakes, developing an instinctive understanding of rooms for art, entertaining and everyday life.The design continues this history. Snider House, an 1828 heritage property and North Toronto’s oldest surviving structure, was originally constructed as a brick Regency Cottage farmhouse at the heart of sprawling pastures and orchards. Over the next 180 years, the surrounding land was redeveloped and the home was expanded and modified – changes that saw its porch lost and the interior subdivided to serve a variety of occupants. In 1979, the property was designated under the Ontario Heritage Act for architectural and historical reasons. The IT company's offices are located in the heritage-protected old Mladinska knjiga printing house, originally designed by architect Savin Sever. They occupy two thirds of the aisle of the otherwise tripartite, formerly industrial building. Farm buildings are under threat in all parts of the world, more so than any other building type. It is not only the case that changing agricultural practices have rendered historic barns, granaries, pigsties, and cattle sheds redundant. Generally removed from population centres, they tend to escape the attention of building conservationists and developers and fall into disrepair. One way to address their decline is to reconceptualise them as museum pieces, inviting the public to step into life on a working farm inspired by a fixed point in history. Partial restoration and revitalization of a listed 19th-century villa in the center of Munich, Germany. The 400 m² property was transformed into an aesthetic clinic while preserving and restoring its historic architectural fabric. Baekje (18 BCE–660 CE) was one of the ancient kingdoms of Korea, established by migrants of Buyeo origin who branched from Goguryeo and settled in the Han River basin. Among its history, the Hansung period—before the capital was relocated to Ungjin—represented the height of Baekje’s prosperity, with the kingdom flourishing in and around present-day Seoul until 475 CE. The original house has a singular historical and heritage value, as its enclosures are part of the medieval wall of the town and one of its turrets. For that reason, the project proposes a renovation not only respecting these elements but also enhancing them, exposing the material of the original walls.
