Cherokee Heritage Center

The new Cherokee Heritage Center renews a 43-acre site in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, returning the grounds of the former Cherokee Female Seminary to active cultural use. Developed over a multi-year engagement with the Cherokee Nation, the project brings together a museum, educational and genealogical spaces, a research center, and areas for community gathering. Schloss Ehestetten

Built in the 13th century, the castle was remodeled and expanded in the 15th and 16th centuries. From 1978 to 1982, it underwent a comprehensive restoration by Johannes Manderscheid, in close consultation with the historic preservation authorities. William Ellis is a renovation and extension to a striking 1950s Modernist house in Burwood. What began as a Feasibility Study quickly became a deep dive into the layered story of this remarkable home. Our clients purchased the house in 2013, shortly after a poorly considered subdivision left it awkwardly stranded on a corner block, stripped of its original northern light and many other redeeming features. Rocket's House

Set near Narrow Neck Beach in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, Rocket’s House is home to a young family and their beloved pets, Rocket and Major Tom. While the existing villa retained much of its original character, awkward wet areas and limited connections to the garden left parts of the house underused. Working entirely within the existing envelope, the design rationalises the bathrooms and laundry, creates a new ensuite and walk-in wardrobe and opens the lounge directly to a pool and cabana. Villa Claude

Many heritage renovations, villa or bungalow, tend to involve some degree of ‘blowing out the back’ to extend living space. The footprint of this two-storey heritage villa in Epsom, however, was capacious enough, and rather required the removal of a series of ground-floor building accretions that had been added to back of the house, and their replacement with a new dining room and veranda. Snider House

Snider House, an 1828 heritage property and North Toronto’s oldest surviving structure, was originally constructed as a brick Regency Cottage farmhouse at the heart of sprawling pastures and orchards. Over the next 180 years, the surrounding land was redeveloped and the home was expanded and modified – changes that saw its porch lost and the interior subdivided to serve a variety of occupants. In 1979, the property was designated under the Ontario Heritage Act for architectural and historical reasons. Farm buildings are under threat in all parts of the world, more so than any other building type. It is not only the case that changing agricultural practices have rendered historic barns, granaries, pigsties, and cattle sheds redundant. Generally removed from population centres, they tend to escape the attention of building conservationists and developers and fall into disrepair. One way to address their decline is to reconceptualise them as museum pieces, inviting the public to step into life on a working farm inspired by a fixed point in history.
