Cherokee Heritage Center

The new Cherokee Heritage Center renews a 43-acre site in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, returning the grounds of the former Cherokee Female Seminary to active cultural use. Developed over a multi-year engagement with the Cherokee Nation, the project brings together a museum, educational and genealogical spaces, a research center, and areas for community gathering.

A series of pavilions are arranged across the site in direct response to the existing topography and woodland. Their placement creates a connected sequence of interior rooms, outdoor spaces, and paths that move through the trees. The tallest pavilion rises above the tree line to serve as a visual landmark, while the pavilion walls incorporate materials that evoke the colors and layering of the earth.

A crescent-shaped creek, supplied by rainwater collected from the pavilion roofs, links the buildings and establishes a continuous landscape experience of moving water, native plantings, and indoor/outdoor interpretive moments.

Trails extend outward to long-established cultural features, including the reconstructed Diligwa village and the Tsa-La-Gi amphitheater. At the center of the grounds, the footprint of the former Seminary becomes an open gathering area, where the Seminary’s three remaining columns are preserved. This space honors the history of the grounds while allowing for new forms of cultural and community use.

Together, these elements are designed to re-establish the Heritage Center as a place of public life and restore a landscape that has long held significance for the Cherokee Nation.
