Unconventional spaces of learning: The Debate Room
The physical spaces in which we find ourselves when developing certain actions have a direct influence in the quality if the activity itself. Due to cultural and of course economical reasons, school furniture industry offers a very limited variety of elements, designed in a way that promotes only a certain kind of educational activities, keen to certain individualism, based on taxonomy and separation, and with a great lack of collaborative spirit.

Isola Vicentina high school
The school designed by Teco+Partners rises in the new urban expansion area of Isola Vicentina in the zone of Vallorcola. It is surrounded by green and looks directly onto the last western foothills of the Lessini Mountains.The building is characterized by the dynamic profile of the great sloping roof. This has a curving development, both lengthwise and transversally, that relates it to the natural forms of the hills and the surrounding landscape. It is further notable for the contrast created by the simple, geometrical volumes of the buildings housing the schoolrooms.

The 'Collège Pasteur' is perceived as a unitary building. Only practice can reveal its richness. Indeed, if to the exterior it wields a function (force of the institution), the interior it's a conductive place for awakening, supported by the sophisticated architectural notions. There's a disconnection between the volume perception of the project and the real experience we might find visiting it. By the privileged views, by a contrasted journey, the project affirms itself as revealing teacher of discovering. The project included the demolition of the existing school building and the construction of a new primary school, a secondary school and a laboratory. The works were a part of the first phase of the Gemeenschapsonderwijs (community education) masterplan. STRABAG Belgium was responsible for the turn-key completion of this new estate school. Not only the construction but also the realization of the school yards and exterior were realized while the children were temporarily housed in 8 containers.
