Voussoir Cloud

Voussoir Cloud, one of a series of invited installations designed by architects for the SCIArc Gallery in Los Angeles, pursues two main project goals: first of all, we aimed to design not an object, but rather an immersive experience that fills the gallery; and second, to explore the space-structuring potential of the material we were working with - a lightweight laminated wood veneer product not typically used in architecture. Caption Caption Voussoir Cloud explores the structural paradigm of pure compression coupled with an ultra-light material system. The design fills the gallery with a system of vaults to be experienced both from within and from above. The edges of the vaults are delimited by the entry soffit and the two long... More

Ivy Tech CC

Moravec Hall is the recently completed building for Ivy Tech Community College in Columbus, Indiana. The building replaces Poling Hall, an outdated 1970s era facility. As a replacement building, the project came with unique constraints such as the need to build the new structure prior to demolition, as well as maintain the near exact square footage with updated programs. At the same time, the project afforded the opportunity to re-shape the campus as well as the daily life of the school. The Ivy Tech building design evolved as the winning entry from an invited competition sponsored by the Cummins Foundation Architecture Program, a design excellence program who's architectural legacy has distinguished the city of Columbus for over six decade... Chengdu Pavilion

IwamotoScott was commissioned in summer 2020 to design an exhibition pavilion with a design as future facing as our earlier Jellyfish House project. The building will serve as an information and learning center for the large new masterplanned district now under way in the Sichuan Province, Chengdu Future Science and Technology Town. The Pavilion is currently in construction. IwamotoScott Architecture IwamotoScott Architecture   The siting situates the pavilion relative to the three main aspects of this rapidly transforming context: the new Tianfu International Airport to the northeast, Future Science and Technology Town to the south, and Jiangxi River Park to the west. The Pavilion's trefoil-like form directly responds... Level 59

IwamotoScott was commissioned to design this upper level floor in the new Salesforce Towerto to accommodate a venture capital company headquarters, alongside meeting spaces, co-working program, hospitality and multi-use event spaces. Panoramic views overlooking the SF Bay Area in all directions informed the design concepts, and drove the space-making, configuration of programmatic areas, and the selection of finish materials. A new bar is housed within an old brick arched niche which originally acted as one of the warehouse doorways. Redpoint Ventures

Redpoint Ventures came to IwamotoScott with the aim of establishing a new urban presence for their highly regarded  Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm at South Park in San Francisco. Part of the contextual legacy of this desirable locale is that the Wired magazine was founded in the vicinity. Bruce Damonte Our design is tailored to meet this aim, creating a bespoke new workplace and event space for them within a 4,200sf raw brick and timber ground floor space fronting South Park in San Francisco. Four main design elements anchor the new space and act as a complimentary set of custom fabricated components in dialogue with each other  –  these include: Bruce Damonte 1) A 35 foot long Douglas Fir co... Cellular Origami

"Cellular Origami" is the name of IwamotoScott's design for the new facade for UCSF's 3rd Street Garage in San Francisco's Mission Bay neighborhood that was produced in response to an invited design competition. The competition brief was focused on creating a new facade to transform UCSF's 3rd Street Garage, which had its earlier facade made of channel glass removed a number of years ago. Craig Scott Craig Scott The project was initiated to both bring a stronger identity and sense of brand to UCSF's campus edge, and to create a dialogue with the high-profile new architecture rising directly across 3rd Street including the new Warriors NBA Arena (Chase Center) and new Uber HQ. Penumbra

Penumbra is a work of Public Art situated on Market Street, San Francisco's urban spine. In addition to our scope as designers of the Serif condo interiors, lobby, common spaces and amenity spaces for this large new mixed use development, IwamotoScott was commissioned by Group i to create this signature piece of immersive sculpture. Craig Scott Situated in a courtyard between the historic Warfield Theater and  the Serif residences / Line hotel, Penumbra's form takes cues from the scientific phenomena of penumbra, 'a partial shadow between regions of full shadow and full illumination'. Craig Scott Penumbra functionally defines the passage to the second lobby entrance to the Line hotel from Market Street, and offers  sha... More

PS House

PS House densifies the inner block of an already dense San Francisco neighborhood (North Beach), while bringing an unexpected degree of spaciousness, natural light and connection with the outside to a small 1200sf urban house. It is a speculative project aimed at maximizing the potential of an existing dilapidated structure at the rear of the property, which was demolished but whose small footprint could not be expanded. The overall site’s void space is strategized in terms of natural light and ventilation, and includes three spaces: the courtyard separating the new house from the existing Edwardian building fronting on Powell Street; an exterior entrance passageway that connects this courtyard to the street; and an upper level south-... Geode ADU

Geode ADU is a small (640 square feet) recently completed accessory dwelling unit that supplements and contrasts an existing mid-century modern Eichler house in Burlingame, CA. The client's brief requested a design for a writing studio and guest unit, as a 'place apart' from the main house and also an inspiring work of architecture -- both in its exterior form and materials, and in its interior spatial character. The design response evolved as a very particular three-dimensional form, with a polygonal plan and a section inflected to both slope and view.  Helping to further shape the design were an unusually-shaped lot with significant topography which impacts the buildable footprint; strict zoning constraints regarding setbacks, size a... Miami City View Garage

IwamotoScott was commissioned by Dacra and LVMH Real estate to design the southern end of the City View Garage in Miami's Design District. Our facade design is adjacent to the central portion of the facade designed by the Los Angeles based artist John Baldessari, and at the opposite end to the north is a facade design by New York based architects, Leong Leong. Luis Gomez Caption Sited along the edge of the Design District adjacent to I195, the building's facade has a strong presence from the freeway, and thus acts as a kind of billboard for the Design District. The main body of the building is a parking structure above a level of retail storefront and includes a small six story office block. IwamotoScott's portion of the facade w... More

Goto House

Goto House sits at the edge of a meadow on a rugged ninety-five acre parcel in Napa County overlooking Lake Berryessa. The meadow acts as a clearing in the oak, pine and manzanita covered surrounding hills. The house engages the spatial dynamics of its situation through the formal and experiential activation of negative space relative to conditions of surface, material, view and landscape. Bruce Damonte Bruce Damonte Bruce Damonte The project brief called for a simple, single story, off-the-grid modern house with maximum connection between interior and exterior, with a program comprising four basic zones totaling about 2,230sf: 1. living / dining / kitchen; 2. master suite; 3. kid's bedroom; 4. yoga room and guest bath. Noe Valley House

IwamotoScott designed this new ground-up house in the Noe Valley neighborhood, as a speculative infill development for a builder in San Francisco whom we've worked together with on several projects. The site is located on a steep street, but has a fairly level topography within the lot, newly opened up by the demolition of a dilapidated small house at the rear of the property. Caption The subtly-angled facade design was created by adapting to  different setbacks of the neighboring houses, and as a  response to the downhill views to the east. Exterior materials include both stained clear cedar vertical boards alternating with blackened spacer boards, aluminum windows with clear cedar casing, and cast-in-place concrete site wo... More

Bloomberg Tech Hub

This is Bloomberg’s first flagship Tech Hub on the West Coast. The new space, completed in May 2015, is both a workplace for Bloomberg’s software engineers and an event space to help foster connections between Bloomberg and Silicon Valley. Bruce Damonte The design juxtaposes new elements against the exposed raw materials of the building shell and translates the form and geometry of the exterior ornamentation. This approach contrasts the existing rough material palette of the exposed concrete and brick interior with a more refined combination of oak flooring and millwork, glass, steel and felt cladding. Bruce Damonte Upon entry, you encounter one of the main design elements: a porous wood “liner” that acco... More
