The campus of the Technical University in Liberec is located in a built-up part of the city with limited possibilities for further growth. For its further development, the university must therefore look for capacity within the campus. The existing buildings are modified and rebuilt according to the current requirements and needs of the school. Graphic Facade and Thermal Barrier The Ecole Polytechnique extension adds two research buildings (biology and mechanical physics) to the buildings designed in 1967 by Henri Pottier. To intervene on the work of his predecessor, Michel Rémon did not stop at its functionalities. On the west side, he added a new front to the existing building. The new face of the school looks toward the town. To elevate the Materials Science program at California Institute of Technology (Caltech), CO Architects designed the Faber Lab & Office for professor Katherine Faber, Ph.D., and the university’s Faber Research Group. This organization studies ways to strengthen brittle materials and specializes in the energy-related applications for ceramics. Thermal-barrier coatings and porous solids for filtration are two primary areas of research. Given a limited site, we had to add two laboratories and preparation rooms each, so we gathered a three-dimensional "space" crossing the pilotis of the existing school building and discovered a site that seemed impossible in the first place.  Kenta Hasegawa Kenta Hasegawa Within the limited site, we placed the additions on the south side to ensure that the sense of openness of the precious courtyard was not lost and also to secure the line of sight. ​In the old industrial East area of Milano Lambrate, close to Rubattino area, client request to develop the refurbishment of an chemical factory build in last century: the industrial sheds where built between 1920 and 1970 and the main building on the street, the office building, was built at the end of the ‘sixties. The project maintain the original volumetric distribution and give to the compound a new and fresh skin. The main façade is totally redesigned with the addition of geometrical bow windows. The international courtyard of sheds is intentionally refurbished to preserve the original environment of the compound. More
