The interiors feature a light and natural color palette, with oak parquet that adds warmth and uniformity to the spaces, complemented by custom-made oak furniture. Its modern design extends in a series of horizontal volumes towards the valley below, opening to an infinity-edge swimming pool, and outdoor living spaces for entertaining and resort-style living. Designed for a constrained Hollywood Hills site, Hedges transforms a compact footprint into a modern home where architecture and outdoor living unfold across multiple levels. The home’s minimalist exterior reveals only glimpses of the light filled interior beyond, but once inside, the home opens up into a spacious light filled foyer with double height glass walls, a floating staircase, and glass floor detail that adds a sense of interconnectedness between the different levels. The Site  As hillside design specialists, the Whipple Russell team sometimes finds it necessary to move mountains – or at least part of one, in order to create a spacious yet intimate modern home. To accomplish these goals for our Hutton house, we first cut into the rear hillside to maximize backyard living space and to site the house further from the street in the front. At the back of the property two porcelain stone retaining walls create a balcony lounge area with a fire pit and greenery overlooking the saltwater pool, spa, and the entire property including multiple firepits, and an outdoor kitchen/bar. The Summitridge house is a creative collaboration between architect Marc Whipple and Troy Adams of Troy Adams Design, who served as project manager and interior designer. Both enjoyed the process immensely, and this distinctive house is certainly evidence of a successful partnership. It all begins with the land and its orientation to the views. The property is a flat hourglass shape on top of a ridge with steep slopes on two sides, so the shape guided the positioning of the house. It has a beautiful view to the west on the left, and looking down to the south, of canyons and the city. A small compact 1600sft, 3bedroom flat was to be designed to cater the needs and aesthetics for three generations and three couples living in. The challenge was to incorporate the exhaustive and diverse functional requirements with coherent aesthetic details. This is the setting for our project inside the gated community of The Vintage in Indian Wells, California.
