The original plan for this project was much more complex, but due to the site being used as a dumping ground over the decades, the soil was unsuitable for such a design. In London’s Hackney Downs, Material Works Architecture has transformed a once-constrained Victorian terrace into a contemporary, low-energy home centred on spatial generosity and daylight. At Hackney Bay House, the most significant intervention is the reshaping of the lower ground floor: by lowering the slab, the design introduces increased ceiling heights that shift the atmosphere from enclosed to expansive. MORFEUS arkitekter were engaged by clients Astri and Henrik Botten Taubøll in 2017 to design a new home on their recently inherited property, Sørbyhaugen 24 in Oslo. The choice fell jointly on transforming and extending the original house from 1933, even though the house was in a poor condition.
