Sitting less than 1km from Port Phillip Bay, this significant renovation has reconfigured the orientation to enjoy the protected north facing garden and the new internal courtyard. The existing state care centre in Knittelfeld, Austria, was renovated by Gem. Wohn- und Siedlungsgenossenschaft Ennstal, a non-profit housing and settlement cooperative, for Volkshilfe Steiermark, a non-profit social services organisation. The work also includes a new two-storey care home and a childcare facility. Designed for nonprofit REACH Community Development, 72Foster contains 101 units of affordable housing tailored to intergenerational families in SE Portland—the first of its kind in the city. The intergenerational focus informs the building’s close proximity to transit, the mix of studio to three-bedroom units, and the project’s sustainability and affordability goals. 72Foster serves residents earning approximately 60% of Median Family Income with twenty apartments set aside for Section 8 vouchers.
