MWArchitekten converts a single-family home into a multigenerational wooden house

Marvellously located within a historically developed town structure on a hillside overlooking Lake Constance and the Alps in the Rhine valley, the project involves the remodelling and expansion of a single-family home by MWArchitekten

Deriving from local architecture characterized by a solid plastered base with a distinct wooden cubature with windows and openings on top, the architects streamline the existing building while enhancing the location's identity.

Architecturally, a natural fir shell with a circumferential dress offers a uniform appearance. The area between this shell and the existing structure creates a strong visual and practical intertwining of interior and exterior spaces.

The upper floor was demolished due to the low height of the room and replaced by a building of contemporary, wooden construction, while the basement and ground floor were renovated and rebuilt. The users now have access to the necessary spaces, including a large living-dining area spread across two floors because of the restructuring.

In conclusion, the renovation presents a carefully orchestrated interplay of woods and surface treatments serving as a homogenous wooden shell designed for two generations of the family.
