Narrative

The tower was in need of refurbishment and restoration, having been converted into a residential property many years ago it was now a little unloved and tired. There were two aspects of the brief, there was the consolidation of weatherproofing to the building, as it had suffered from rain ingress and dampness. The second part of the brief was to convert the space into a cosy retreat, for the clients to relax and unwind in.  The six-month restoration stripped away doors, partitions, and thick, almost medieval window frames that had been added over the years to emphasize the building’s historic brickwork. Here is a story about our clients, Jeffrey Kwok and his father, who are both philanthropists from Hong Kong.Jeffrey's father ran a chain of "Mahjong Schools" in Hong Kong and his flagship outlet is situated on the ground floor of a sixty years old building called the Alhambra Building in Kowloon, Yau Ma Tei, near Temple Street. Temple Street was, one of Hong Kong’s red-light districts visited by aged local men but now dazzles with tourism. Jeffrey works in the advertising industry and is the founder of a local advertising company, PMM Media, which promotes social enterprises. Situated in the city centre of Frankfurt, between the town hall and the Main river, is the completely refurbished and newly extended Historical Museum Frankfurt. Kossmann.dejong designed three exhibitions – one temporary and two permanent – that highlight the many faces of Frankfurt. For the ‘Typically Frankfurt!’ exhibition, which connects the entrance with the new building, Kossmann.dejong designed a snow globe – one of the most ubiquitous tourist souvenirs – to start the museum experience.
