Detail: Henning Larsen’s World of Volvo is a study in mass timber construction

“World of Volvo” opened its doors to visitors in Spring 2024. A joint venture between Volvo Cars and Volvo Group, the new experience center is located in central Gothenburg, the Swedish city where Volvo’s journey began in 1927. The project by global architecture firm Henning Larsen is a study in mass timber construction. Spanning 22,000 square meters (236,806 square feet), the building is constructed from glued laminated timber (glulam) and cross-laminated timber (CLT) — on the interior, three majestic tree trunk-like columns are arranged in a mathematical pattern and fan outwards, their “canopies” supporting the roof’s entire mass and enveloping visitors in an enchanting forest-like setting. Panzhou International Hotel

Located in the Central Business District of Gaozhou in Maoming, Guangdong Province, the project is planned to be a high-rise city landmark with a height of 150m. The site is next to the largest shopping mall in the local area, and given the fact that this project is the final development phrase of the plot, all other volumes have been completed and put into use from the very beginning of intervention. SPDG was commissioned to redesign the façade, circulations, and interiors of the 2/3 built tower in 10 months. Office Renovation

The project entails the renovation of an office space located at one of the main buildings of a group of companies in Athens. The guiding principle was to create a timber interior that innovatively juxtaposes organic forms and clean lines. Spyros Hound Photography Spyros Hound Photography Covering the two pre-existing load-bearing columns and parts of the ceiling, the main element of the scheme is a sculptural plywood structure that draws inspiration from the ocean floor. The design fluidly unfolds and enfolds the space as it functions as a unifying gesture above eye-level. In stark contrast, the custom-made furniture was conceived in strong, geometric shapes that address the functional needs of a focused workspace as well as a c... More

Detail: Architect Guto Requena’s Terrace Apartment

Estudio Guto Requena has completed the Terrace Apartment, a biophilic and hyperconnected home in São Paulo, Brazil. The apartment is part of the Albina apartment building, an icon of Brazilian modernism designed in 1962 by Botti Rubin Arquitetos. In a conversation with Guto Requena, the architect describes the Terrace Apartment’s design and development. Requena’s own home, he sets out how the apartment is something of an experiment for his approach to architecture: a combination of biophilia, hybrid design, and parametric design. The result is, in many ways, a study in Guto Requena’s vision of the future. Maíra Acayaba   The Terrace Apartment “I’ve been dating this building since... More

Anemos beach bar

The proposal aimed at the formation of a unique identity for the café Anemos Kourouta through the design of its interior implementing a singular system in its internal envelope.  This was pursued by the creation of a continuous inner “skin”, which derived from wind flow diagrams and was based on the name of the café (Ανεμος is wind in Greek). This interior surface covered the interior walls with a total length of 45 meters and surface of 230 m2. Caption The structure is a composite multi-leveled surface that extends gradationally upwards, towards the interior. Mitosis - XS

Mitosis is the follow-up of a multi-awarded pilot project completed by GG-loop in 2019: Freebooter, a pair of prefabricated CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) apartments in Amsterdam, wrapped in a parametric timber louvered facade. The building was created using biophilic principles, connecting architecture with nature in order to improve the life quality of the people who use the building. GG-loop’s ambition to bring these qualities to multiple scales has resulted in Mitosis. The name Mitosis refers to the biological process of a single cell dividing itself into two identical daughter cells. It represents the modularity and the long-term adaptation of the system and serves as a metaphor for a flexible co-living organism where each residen... More

Loop of Wisdom

An Informal IconLiving up to the suggestiveness of its name, the Loop of Wisdom embodies a timeless architectural concept. Powerhouse Company’s design for a technology museum and reception center for a new neighborhood in Chengdu, China, is much more than an exuberant landmark. In addition to its obvious aesthetic appeal and cultural program, the fluid structure incorporates a spectacular public space – an undulating rooftop trail. This addition makes the Loop of Wisdom an accessible icon, rather than a remote beacon. It invites people to explore it and make it part of their regular walking or jogging routine.   Designed as a continuous ring, the loop’s form is archetypal and universal; organic and geometric; enigma...
