The construction sector is responsible for around 11% of national CO₂ emissions. At the same time, we urgently need to build more affordable housing. Rather than making the problems worse, we as architects can contribute to the solutions. How? At NEXT, of course, we have answers to these and other pressing questions. If we want to build and live climate-neutral and regenerative in 2050, we must work proactively towards this right now. GROUP A's think tank CARBONLAB, together with Aveco de Bondt, DGMR, Adviesbureau ABT-Lüning and De Urbanisten, conducted research into what is already possible with today's knowledge. In Maastricht, Netherlands, a heritage building has been transformed into a cutting-edge, sustainable headquarters for dsm-firmenich, a global developer and producer of nutrition, health, and beauty solutions. Commissioned by developers EDGE and 3W Real Estate, Rotterdam-based architectural studio Broekbakema led on the project’s architectural renovations and new-build elements, while Delft-based Fokkema & Partners Architecten designed the interior architecture. Next to metro station Romeynshof in Rotterdam's Ommoord district, project Populus unites people, nature and the city. Our design consists of an ensemble of four terrace buildings in a blue-green and partly raised landscape. With 200 homes realized in wood, it will be one of the largest wood construction projects in the Netherlands. Due to the original visionary design of this 1970s office building, with open office floors concept and the solid construction and materials, it could be transformed into a future-proof office in 2022. The building is located at Basisweg 10 in the transforming neighborhood of Amsterdam West. It consists of 7 unique floors (each about 7,000 m²) in the shape of 8 clovers around the central green heart for the offices. GROUP A has completed the sculptural office tower centrally located in the vibrant Utrecht Station Area. The 90-meter-high Central Park is named after the subtropical park that marks the city’s 45 meter line. The two-story indoor park is enclosed by a receding glass facade embracing the park like an undulating curtain. This is where employees come together to unwind, brainstorm or attend an event in a unique ecosystem overlooking the city.
