A beautiful and ambitious plan envisioned a rigorous change: a parking lot besides a busy road was to be transformed into a park, right in the middle of central Apeldoorn. It required the construction of an underground parking garage, a low-traffic area, new bicycle paths and a prominent role for the local brook, The Grift, that after a long time was to be brought above ground again. OKRA landscape architects designed a city park, the Catherina Amalia Park, that adds a green gateway to the inner city and creates a space to meet and mingle for different groups of residents and visitors. Along the water Just west of Amsterdam’s Central Station a new extension of Amsterdam is being built. Of the three Houthavens (Timberdocks), the middle one is being transformed into a residential area. The Pontsteiger building is the 90-meter high icon that functions as the landmark of this development. It is a robust, square building towering above the water in a bend of the river IJ. A dam connects the building to the Tasmanstraat. The entrance to the two underground parking garages is also to be found on this dam. One of the largest bicycle parking garages in the Netherlands has been built underneath the Koningin Julianaplein in The Hague, right in front of the Central Station. Silo developed a powerful spatial concept that transforms parking your bike into a museum-like experience. The unconventional result enhances comfort and safety for the thousands of daily users. The NYC Garage successfully merges safety, efficiency and the functionality of 1,994 parking spaces for employees and visitors with the strength and spirit of competition and athleticism. As a dynamic facility complementing the character of the campus fabric, the garage redefines how people think about parking structures. Themes of movement and bold ideas are expressed through the garage’s massing. The structure is split into four 60-foot parking bays, with each bay expressed separately from the next and resulting in an undulating roof and end walls. As the place in which the transition from driver to pedestrian occurs, the LA Garage is a nexus of activity for people arriving on campus. The design breaks up the typical parking structure mass, providing opportunities for daylight and creating a “wow” space in between: a public covered courtyard carved into the center of the building that encourages chance encounters, casual gatherings and collaboration.
