The project entailed the development of a new Primary School, replacing the dilapidated Botha’s Halte farm school, in the Breede River Valley, for the Bosjes Trust. Although a privately sponsored project, the school is operated by the Western Cape Education Department. The new buildings provide a state-of-the-art facility for 250 rural primary school learners from a predominantly farm worker community. The buildings have been designed around sustainability principles, while respecting the cultural heritage of the area. After the completion of Abington Friends School’s (AFS) Garden Station (for early childhood students), we worked with the school once again to design and build AFS Outside: an abstract play structure, water feature, and associated landscape forms. Here, older students can crawl, swing, run, and climb during their breaks from classroom learning. This area has become a central part of AFS’ curriculum; the structure challenges young students to take physical risks on their own terms and integrate the adjacent natural forms into their everyday play. The Children’s Park, a linear garden with eight attractions on raised platforms, has giant bobbin- shaped elements in wooden lattice sheltering the exhibits and children’s activities from rain and sun. Fragments of domesticated nature where the natural and artificial coexist, the exhibits were designed to privilege the organic language of nature as opposed to a more formal architectural vocabulary. The project, essentially a nature walk with eight exhibits, offers children playful learning experiences as they interact with various aspects of Expo Milan 2015’s core theme, “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”. The designers from Extreme Design Studio chose “cosmopolitan luxury” as the main theme of their restaurant club project , as it most closely reflects the desire of their client to recreate a stylish and luxurious interior club represented by the motto 'Eat, Play and Dance’. They created a design that targets at the night kings and queens from the cosmopolitan city-plush interior, shiny surfaces and spectacular chandeliers. Project: Regal Emporia Location: Great Noida, India Type: Mixed-Use Size: 50,000 m2 Client: Investor Clinic Design: Girimun Ltd 2011 Opening: 2015 This mixed-use development in Greater Noida Extension will act as a commercial hub for the developing region. Five levels of retail and a green terraced roof form a shopping and entertainment platform directly connected to 45,000 sqm of office space distributed in two towers.
