Stack & Field is a small but generous extension of a 100-year-old weatherboard house on a tight inner-city block in Melbourne, Australia. It challenges a fundamental assumption of compact urban housing: that density requires consolidation. Located on a constrained and narrow site, the project plan dissolves layout and building form into a series of offset planes, layered rooms and courtyards and substitutes size for spatial richness. The plot is located on the very edge of the Avala National Park. It is surrounded by dense coniferous forest, with trees reaching heights of up to 30 meters. Within the plot itself, there are areas covered with trees as well as zones completely without vegetation—the central and southern parts of the site. Along the access road, there is a zone with the highest concentration of trees. A complex of three stone-built buildings is located west of the city of Chania in the village of Kalivani, near Balos. Built on a plot of 420 sq.m., the buildings, measuring 220 sq.m., are arranged around an inner courtyard with water as the connecting element between the building volumes. Pointed arches, doorways with semicircular or low-arched lintels reveal the Venetian imprint on Cretan architecture. The 1842 Greek Revival Topping Rose House, named for original owner Judge Abraham Topping Rose, has been adapted as a luxury hospitality property with a 22-key hotel, spa, fitness center, restaurant, and event space. The design solution reflects the current time and place while acknowledging the scale, rhythm, and history of the surrounding architecture. Country Estate is a restoration and expansion of the Wiley House, an original mid-century modern residence by architect Philip Johnson. This project integrates new structures into the tranquil Connecticut setting with contextually respectful design and a commitment to conservation strategies. A new barn was constructed to function as a gallery for the expansive art collection of the new owner. This residence on Long Island’s Noyack Bay frames spectacular water views, optimizes indoor-outdoor beachfront living, and emphasizes openness. Two offset parallel wings aligned with the shoreline are connected via circulation areas at each level. Dramatic living spaces are oriented to the water while support spaces face inland. Pond House is part of a large estate on Long Island directly adjacent to Mecox Bay. This house is the third piece which acts as the sole contemporary addition to the estate. Two simple gable-shaped volumes of glass are shrouded in horizontal western red cedar wood slats, providing a delicate, layered interior experience while alluding to traditional barn forms in the region. Rooted in a traditional setting, beachside creates the appearance of a traditional home from afar, with a very contemporary spin. The gabled forms and familiar door and window openings respond to the regional and historic precedent of the area, however the fiber cement siding, zinc roof and steel sash windows announce the present. Compelling and ambiguous, this underground pool house is experienced as an apparition in the landscape along the coast of the Long Island Sound. Set into a subtle incline just before the land drops off to meet the beachfront, it is almost invisible as one approaches from the main entrance of the estate. From this point of arrival, the only hint of what lies below is a series of glass skylights cut into the ground. The structure faces the sound through full-height glass walls that bring daylight into the interiors and retract to give access to a terrace that is shaded by a brise-soleil. Friscanzana house is a country mansion harmoniously placed in the network of  stone walls and typical paths in the countryside surrounding the Sicilian town of Ragusa. This project explores the potential to create an urban oasis with the design of the home’s architecture and interiors. This residence is located in a densely-populated neighborhood and its design incorporates a series of indoor-outdoor spaces, connecting the home to its urban context while serving as a sanctuary for the owner and guests. This renovation project forms a vital component of a luxurious high-end villa nestled within an exclusive residential enclave along an esteemed road.
