House Be is an experiment in dwelling in and amongst nature is the central theme. A rhythmic structure in concrete, wood and brick contrasts with the frivolity of the restored landscape. Located on a vegetative gradient in Northern California, this three-acre property is in the Silicon Valley community of Woodside.  The property owners commissioned Surfacedesign to merge the residential structures—designed by architecture firm Olson Kundig—and the surrounding landscape into a single, flowing, integrated entity.  The philosophical design approach prioritized blurring the sight lines of the parcel’s varying elevations and “borrowing” vistas of the adjacent Santa Cruz mountains.  This vision was realized by innovatively creating four distinct planting areas: olive orchard, house entrance (succulents), water-wise perennial meadow, and California native meadow transition edge.  ... The client’s existing property had a nicely updated 1950’s house with a beautiful Japanese inspired garden with a small pond in the back.  The client’s initial instinct was to add a sunroom on an existing back terrace in between the house and the garden for a more engaging connection between inside and outside. Inspired by the concept of bringing the outside in, insertion of this small 275 square foot,12 foot and 24 living area with cozy small fire place connected the client’s existing home with the outdoors.  A new 22-foot-wide by 8-foot-high folding window wall that frames the view out to the landscaped pond that when fully open blurs the lines between inside and out. Beyond the new window wall, a new exterior seating... The meeting with a master builder interested in research and meticulous in the use of materials has made it possible to realize a redevelopment project of the external spaces of a house located in the small town of Bianzano.Before the intervention the space surrounding the house was devoid of design even if the signs deriving from its use appeared clear: passages, planted areas, historic plants and panoramic points. However, a unitary project was not recognizable. At street level, prime space facing main road is dedicated to premium retail space. A feature canopy marks the main entrance and directs people towards the main lobby from the side road.
