Lake Mississauga Cottage

A four-season escape for a busy young family, this Kawarthas-region cottage explores the duality of being both intimate and expansive. Located on the edge of a quiet bay at the end of a rustic gravel road, the heavily treed site is secluded upon approach, yet opens up to a dramatic Mississauga Lake vista. Inside, the L-shaped building strikes a similar balance between privacy and openness, with grand social spaces designed to accommodate large gatherings of extended family and friends, and other, more tucked away areas introducing intimate spots to relax and recharge. To control scale and impact on the site, the cottage is divided into two forms based on private and semi-private functions. A horizontal wing built parallel to the shoreline... More

Foster Loop

Located in Mazama, Washington, the site was enjoyed by the family for many years as a campground. The design minimizes impact to the environment by raising the residence off the ground with small concrete piers and placing the house between stands of trees, as one would a tent. Accessed by a slightly elevated walk, the entry opens up to a 1 1/2 story living space and kitchen which are anchored by a centrally located fireplace and the stair. Upstairs on the second floor are "tent like" bedrooms – lowwalls create a cozy atmosphere. Both ends of the residence have indoor/outdoor spaces, including a deck and elevated catwalk that runs between the trees and across a small valley – directly to a hill the clients consider their favorit... Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Exp

The Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience, in Seattle’s Chinatown International District, provides space for community meetings and events, public space for the neighborhood, theater space for performances and presentations, exhibit spaces for community art and emerging Asian Pacific American artists, family-centered learning environments and leadership development for neighborhood youth. The design grew out of the original, 1910 multi-story building that served as a social center and living quarters for Chinese, Japanese and Filipino immigrants. Drawing inspiration from the building’s rich history, we saved as much of the original building as possible. In addition to building materials – such as timbers cut out between... More

Kimberly Clark Expansion

Founded in 1872, Kimberly Clark and its well-known paper products are an indispensable part of life for many Americans. In 2013, the company found a two-story space on the top floors of the Civic Opera Building, and called on our firm to implement the design. They returned to us in 2017 to renovate and expand. Elements of the company's history are woven into the design, connecting the current space to the headquarters in Northern Wisconsin and the original Chicago sales office in Willoughby Tower, a 1920s landmark. Eastlake incorporated enlarged vintage photos and line drawings into the design as murals and film, bringing images of the past into the present. In the cafe, motifs from Willough by Tower were transformed into wall covering, and... More

Octagon

The building itself, along with the beautiful views and existing black granite and white marble floors, helped dictate the direction towards a clean, timeless, and modern aesthetic. Working together with the client, it was decided to focus our main energy and impact on the more public areas of the space to emphasize the brand of Octagon, while provided a clean palette of contrasting black, white, and red in the rest of the workspace. It was important to convey a sense of transparency and warmth, which was done by centralizing the public areas around the reception. Reclaimed wood flooring was used to visually connect the space: starting with the transaction top of the reception desk (with integrated back lit logo), to the wall in the sea... More
