Transforming part of a former office building from the early 1930s into an apartment we were confronted with the challenge to maintain the spaciousness that its open plan had to offer and refrain from subdividing it into a series of isolated rooms. A historic building, once the shipping department for a local food company in Nashville, was restored to house the offices of CA South Development. To extend the building’s life cycle and preserve its character, the existing building was adapted to meet the current needs of a workplace. Private offices and break-out spaces with glass partitions featuring dichroic film were added to create moments of transparency and color. Like wine, buildings have the capacity to embody their surroundings, reveal history, and tell stories about their inhabitants. They can pronounce a terroir that enhances one’s understanding of place. The Hacienda at Scribe Winery exemplifies this notion. In 2006, Scribe embarked on a mission to resurrect the Rhinefarm Vineyard in Carneros Valley near Sonoma, one of the oldest vineyards in California. Central to this mission was a reincarnation of its original homestead, the Hacienda. Nestled in a valley at the base of Claremont Canyon, this 1937 2-story residence was originally designed by Bay Area architect John Ekin Dinwiddie. Having been flipped just prior to the current owners’ purchase of the property, the bones of the original home were still intact, but the updated spaces were generic and lacked the history of a family home. The design creates a modern addition that integrates seamlessly with the existing shell and injects the family’s character with modern craft.Each space was carefully considered to maximize its connection to the surrounding landscape and views while maintaining privacy from the street. This remodel transformed a standard 1950’s daylight basement house into a dramatic view focused residence for a couple including an Accessory Dwelling Unit and Art Studio. The 3,800 sf home is located in the Magnolia neighborhood of Seattle and has a sweeping 270 degree view of the city, mountains and bay. One inhabitant utilizes a wheelchair making accessibility an overriding concern necessitating the inclusion of an elevator.Limited by budget and regulation to the existing foundation the house became a vertical assemblage of spaces reaching toward the view. The design emphasizes this verticality while anchoring to the ground plane with brick accents. Despite the modern materials of the home the brick serves to relate t...
