XYZ House

Wengen, SwitzerlandThe horizon is the line that emphasizes the infinite- Victor HugoSitting majestically high in the Alps, the cruciform like assemblage contains three bold architectural volumes clad in corten steel. Conceptually the project is organized by three mutually perpendicular planes (the three Cartesian coordinates of x, y, and z): An entry tunnel/bridge, a tower which contains the vertical circulation (staircase and elevator) and the main habitable space, which is suspended weightlessly above the valley below. In essence, this is a dwelling meaningfully stripped of all nostalgia from the material world. One is immediately reminded of the great German romantic poets and painters like Caspar David Friedrich and the poet Heinrich He... More

VENICE BIENNALE 2012 - PART

Venice, Italyexhibition at FÄRGFABRIKEN KONSTHALL, Stockholm 2013Part is a work by architect Petra Gipp and composer Kim Hedås. The work constitutes part of an artistic investigation that intends to explore how dimensions of architecture/art and music/sound may be widened as more layers are added to the totality. In Part, sound and structure interact to create new sequences that together build a polyphonically shifting play. The sound is integrated with the cast – concrete, wax and bronze – and is filtered through the parchment membrane. The architecture is defined through the matter and its relationship to the music, which in turn is reinforced by the space. Part inquires whether these layers can enhance the understandi... More

Through the Depths

It is with incessant and intense efforts that brilliance comes out... It is with unrelenting focus and passionate perseverance that the outcome gets magical... Through the Depths is an ode to such passion, endeavour and intent... that results in a ‘Gem’, which is a marvel of nature.   A gem that is delicately extracted ‘Through the depths’ of the earth and finely crafted by the ones who care.   Fabricated over a period of nine months, as a symbolic portrayal of constantly changing life, the installation represents the process of extraction of raw stone from the depths of the earth and its subsequent refinement into an aesthetic symbol. Standing 12 feet tall on an elevated stone surface from the ground... More

Stone's craftsmen

"I was alone the sum of my emotions, and More in me it was the stone timeless"Carl Gustav JungThe exhibition is conceived as a meeting moment based on the exchange and dialogue between three different disciplines compared: painting, sculpture and architecture. The element that unites them is the moltrasina stone, material extracted from the Como area and in particular from Faggeto Lario's quarry. In these different research paths we find a common poetics, an attitude inspired by and rooted in the artisan tradition. The union of the three "artisans of stone" has led to a reflection and a comparison between the different disciplines that finds its concreteness through the elaboration of the exhibition and the realization of the catalog. Photoptosis

The Growth of PlantsPhotoptosis is a sculpture that explores the medium of light as a material that in itself can grow the same way that plants do. Photoptosis consists of a triangulated, tree-trunk-like stainless steel surface, and onto this a set of side-glowing fiber optics cables has grown like the veins of Ivy on a tree. The geometries of both the stainless steel surface as well as the fiber optics cables have been developed through computational algorithms that digitally simulate the growth of veins and plants. This venation algorithm simulates the need of plants to reach the sun light or of veins in leaves to supply every cell with nutrients. In doing so, the growth of the branches or the veins slowly expands to cover a large area. Fo... More

Light Arrival

Having grown tired of Chicago’s humid summers and cold winters limiting their use of an existing screened porch, the clients requested an enclosed sunroom, uplifting and full of light, to be enjoyed year round. The architect, Matt Flynn, wanted a fluid presence to soften the rectangular space. The result: a curvilinear, translucent, backlit, full-room suspended ceiling that bathes the sunroom in relaxing, diffuse light.DesignThe initial intention was to build the ceiling in flexible drywall. But when lighting for the room was discussed – with the typical solutions being recessed ceiling fixtures or cove lighting – the design concept took a sharp bend. By constructing the project in translucent acrylic and hiding the light fixtures above it,... More

Temasek Club

Sited on the pristine greenery adjacent to Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and spanning 21,000 square metres, the Temasek Club was purposed as a sanctuary for Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) regulars, Full-time National Service and National Service officers to relax within the natural surrounds. DP Architects (DPA) won the design competition held by Temasek Club on the basis of its merits: chiefly, it was the only scheme that sought to conceal the volume of the club buildings by ingeniously tucking the mass within a natural valley in the terrain. The terrain was cleverly employed as a cradle for the built massing; from the main entrance court, the club appears as a single-storey building. Sensitive site-planning ensured that views of the nature res... More
