What a tree! That was one of the first thoughts during the site visit. No wonder this tree was and is protected. The whole plot was overgrown, and it was clear that as much of the greenery as possible should be preserved. Unfortunately, there were also some diseased trees that could not be saved, just like the existing, dilapidated bungalow. The plot was not easy to plan, not only because of the existing trees but also due to the building regulations. Within the tight framework conditions, a very compact semi-detached house for two families with three roofs was built, which not only makes optimum use of the eaves height regulations but also provides great spaces inside. Unique townhouses in Tygelsjö.

In Tygelsjö, south of Malmö in Sweden, Kaminsky Arkitektur has designed 14 unique townhouses in row and semi-detached styles, complete with generous courtyards. Ledge House

In the local context where house owners generally wants to fit in as many bedrooms as possible, this project went the opposite direction, so as to free up the rest of the house for communal spaces. The brief is deceptively simple but reflects a kinship that wants to spend as much time together as possible; the family wants only 2 bedrooms in the 3 storey residence. All other program spaces in the house are designed as shared spaces without enclosures. The key design gesture is a cantilevered ledge space that punctures through the middle of the house. Jalan Kembangan House

The site for this house posed several challenges to overcome. Firstly, it is located right at the junction of two busy 4-lane roads. And in addition to that, the overhead MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) viaduct for the East-West cross-island train is located just beyond one of these roads. There is constant noise coming from cars and the passing train. The front of the site, where the main gate is located, faces almost West. To keep out heat and glare from the low angle western sun, the 2 most visible facades cannot have too many see-through openings.
