Design details include reclaimed ‘ship’s knees” as braces in the dining area. The shingles on the roof will weather over time and become light gray, like the regional architectural style in the Cape Cod area.   The new clubhouse celebrates the past but looks to the future. The building addresses the site and presents a handsome profile atop the rolling hills overlooking Buzzard’s Bay. The existing house was a spec house built in the 1980′s which suffered simply from bad design; poor massing at the entry & poor stucco detailing. The primary goal of the clients was to change the exterior appearance of the house and add curb appeal.The architect’s design solution was to remove the roof and dormers above the entry and to frame a new roof in its’ place. The recessed entry was eliminated (which enlarged the foyer) and a new covered entry was created (with a roof deck above). All of the roofing, siding and exterior trim was removed and replaced with cedar shingles for the roofing & siding, with PVC chosen for the exterior trim. This shingle style home was designed for a young family with small children, on a “tear-down” lot in a residential neighborhood. The lot was long and shallow, so the design response was similar in order to conform to the zone code regulations.Cedar shingles were selected for the roofing and siding, with a stone base that wraps around the house. Tapered bungalow columns sit on stone piers at the covered porches, while copper is used extensively for gutters, flashing and at the roof above the entry. The cedar shingle siding sweeps in 3 horizontal bands to break up the siding, while the upper gables have shingles set in a diagonal pattern to do the same. This project was designed for a developer for a 2 lot subdivision in Rye, NY. Given artistic freedom, the architect chose to design a classic shingle style home with extensive use of stone as a base which anchors the house.The house is finished in a dark green trim, with deep red aluminum clad windows for a unique take on the classic shingle style palette.   Material Used :1. This was a spec house designed for a developer on a ½ acre lot where the existing house was torn down. The house consists of 5000 SF over 2 floors, with an additional 1000 SF of living space in the basement.      The program consists of a living room, dining room, kitchen, breakfast room, family room, study, laundry room & powder room on the first floor, with a master bedroom suite & 4 bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms on the second floor. The home, built in 1905, is a New England brick and shingle style residence sitting next to an overgrown lot. It was given the tongue-in-cheek name The Farm, due to the rarity of backyards and outdoor living spaces in the city.    More

A couple with property on a cove overlooking the ocean asked for a house that would be comfortable for just the two of them the majority of the time. However, with their love of entertaining, the house had to grow on busy weekends to accommodate their children, grandchildren, and guests. The Cow Hollow Residence consists of a remodel and small addition to the existing two story, single family residence originally constructed in 1917. The original owners, P.J. Martin Estates, hired architect Elizabeth Austin to design the home.The project consisted of a complete interior remodel, the conversion of existing crawl space areas to habitable square footage, and additions at the first and second levels. The Inverted Warehouse/Townhouse is an addition and renovation of a Tribeca loft building. The existing structure, a traditional New York warehouse covers the entire lot, consuming the exterior space traditional in domestic construction. Inverting the conventional townhouse organization recovers this coveted ground. Dissipating energy into the dark center of this converted warehouse, three double story voids animate the missing “garden” of the townhouse providing light, air, and visual contemplation. This Mercer Island shingle style custom home features an exterior of stone masonry and cedar shingles with the stone serving to anchor the home to its site. Traditional exterior forms contain the open floor plan of a more contemporary interior design which stays true to the shingle style through authentic detailing and appropriate materials. The clients, their children grown, wanted to scale down their lives and build a smaller, three bedroom house, with a ground floor family room that could become the master bedroom in the future, should stairs prove too arduous. The interior remodel of this classic four-story shingle style house was nearly complete when our involvement with the project began. The program required that the street garden adhere to the character of the original architecture while the gardens at the 2nd and 3rd floor terraces utilize the minimalist modern vocabulary of the remodel. The clients desired that these terrace gardens have a contemplative, peaceful quality that would be apparent when occupied and when viewed from the interior of the house.
