Community Housing in Kallang Whampoa is a HDB Built To Order (HDB BTO) housing project located at Kallang Whampoa and consists of 3 blocks of 32-34 storey high-rise apartments, a multi-storey carpark (MSCP), and a purpose-built Active Aging Hub, which is the first of its kind in a housing estate in Singapore. This project features a rich matrix of well-integrated shared spaces filled with vibrancy and diversity that make a positive contribution to the experience of living in the heartlands. In the local context where house owners generally wants to fit in as many bedrooms as possible, this project went the opposite direction, so as to free up the rest of the house for communal spaces. The brief is deceptively simple but reflects a kinship that wants to spend as much time together as possible; the family wants only 2 bedrooms in the 3 storey residence. All other program spaces in the house are designed as shared spaces without enclosures. The key design gesture is a cantilevered ledge space that punctures through the middle of the house. The People’s Chapel is a small church sitting on a 200sqm sliver of land in a mature landed residential estate. The original church occupied a single storey corner terrace built in the 1940s. Plans for rebuilding came about after heavy downpour in October 2010 caused serious damage, rendering it unsafe for occupation.The unique setting of a religious building in a residential area caused concern to the planning authority. A protracted 4-year appeal process eventually rezoned the residential site as Place of Worship in April 2015, with the total floor area capped at original building footprint. DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT We were engaged to design a family home for the Tangs, a family of 4. They have 2 children in their teens, and their needs were simply to provide for a comfortable and modern abode that would allow for their family to spend memorable times and stay closely knitted. It was envisioned the home would be sustainable as well, hopefully for the generations to come. CLIENT'S BRIEF Our Client's requirements were specific in their response to certain spaces. The living area was to be comfortably spacious and the dining and kitchen were important social areas both for entertaining friends as well as spending quality time with family.
