Torre Reforma

Located on Paseo de la Reforma, Mexico City’s most renowned avenues, Torre Reforma is part of a cultural, historical, and financial district. It is a turning point for vertical urban growth in the megalopolis of Mexico City, having a 2,800 m2 ground site, extremely small for a high-rise building of roughly 87,000 m2. Its shape, derived by the architectural-structural parti, takes into consideration many social, financial and environmental factors. The 57 story building, distinguished by its triangular form, is composed of two 246 meter high exposed concrete walls, resembling the form of an open book, closed by a third glass-façade- metallic diagrid, with a panoramic view to Chapultepec Park. Its façades allow for a versatile column free spa... More

Maison Atelier

The Casa-Atelier is the result of aconversion of a small attic which, in 1960, was a drying room on the top floor of the highest building in the heart of Città-Giardino. It had a terrace that led to a small toilet. Then, in 1990,the terraced was transformed bythe addition of a conservatory, a room with glass walls that housed a kitchen. The architects, who now live in the house, then proceeded to revolutionize the 29 sq. m of the attic and the 19 sq. m outdoors. The idea was: it doesn’t matter how many square metresyou have but the perception you have of them. First, they expanded the usable space with the construction of three functional areas in wood: two partition wall in the front room, one at 900 and another along the parapet of the... More

New York Horizon

As the busiest and most densely populated county in America, Manhattan has always been a big fan of skyscrapers. Limited by its street grid, however, buildings in New York City are often skinny and tall. Rather than constructing another slim tower by building upwards, "New York Horizon" envisions a new paradigm by digging downward to Central Park's bedrock, which will reveal the park’s rugged natural terrain while also creating a continuous wall of skyscrapers around its periphery to house habitable spaces with unobstructed views of the new underground park. Envisioned by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux over 150 years ago, Central Park was so beautifully designed that the people of today overlook the fact that it is actually an ar... More

Nexus

Main Formulation The starting point for the Nexus building is the search for an alternative to the high-rise point tower typology where a large central core is surrounded by usable space. In these kinds of buildings, the usual rich mix of internal spatial qualities: flexibility, views, and vertical movement are sacrificed to create an economy of scale of uniformly repeated floors with only minor variations in geometry in order to sculpt an external shape. Consequently the experience of inhabitation and circulation is far from memorable since the qualities of the enclosed space are monotonous. To confront this tendency Nexus starts by looking at how architecture is occupied and lived from within, favouring the users who daily inhab... More

Towers installation

On 11th of April the INTERNI magazine annual art installations exhibition kicked off. This year the theme is Open Borders. Russian architects Sergei Tchoban and Sergey Kuznetsov, invited for a fifth time to participate in this show, have created the interactive sculptural arrangement Towers for the exhibition (together with Agnia Sterligova, Planeta 9). Towers is a 12-meter-high cylindrical volume installed in the center of the main courtyard of the University of Milan. The tower that is in front of us effectively is rather a prototype of a tower because of its extremely laconic, even abrupt form. It is a kind of rough workpiece serving as a starting point for reflecting on the nature of architecture and the role of man-made dominants in... More

Embassy of France and French Institute in Jakarta

French Embassy is established in Jakarta since 1975, along the prestigious avenue of Jalan Thamrin. Project of the new diplomatic campus comes from the will to bring together all diplomatic and cultural French services in Jakarta, at a single location. The campus is located between many skyscrapers and a major Highway. Despite its small scale as a five-storey building, the campus is affirming itself as a signal with two recognizable volumes. In this messy urban context, the building is setting apart thanks to its singular and homogeneous materiality. The project aims to provide a simple, clear readable architecture. Programmatic entities are: Chancellery; economic, military and cultural missions; French Institute. This gathering impro... More

M.A.P. PAVILION

Text: BABEL and Impromptu Projects Macau Architecture Promenade(MAP) pavilion is the result of a worldwide open call for artists, launched by BABEL cultural organization. From more than 50 proposals from all over the world, BABEL has selected the large-scale architectural pavilion by Impromptu Projects (João Ó and Rita Machado). The selection was based on the concept that an artwork to be contemporary must contain in itself a certain part of the future, rather than being only from its own time. The panel responsible for the selection, including Tiago Quadros and Margarida Saraiva, directors of BABEL cultural organization and José Drummond, artist and curator, considered that the work contained in itself three different possibilities of...
