Scribe Winery and Hacienda
Like wine, buildings have the capacity to embody their surroundings, reveal history, and tell stories about their inhabitants. They can pronounce a terroir that enhances one’s understanding of place. The Hacienda at Scribe Winery exemplifies this notion. In 2006, Scribe embarked on a mission to resurrect the Rhinefarm Vineyard in Carneros Valley near Sonoma, one of the oldest vineyards in California. Central to this mission was a reincarnation of its original homestead, the Hacienda. Sonoma Passive House
An entry courtyard, arching shapes, stone and ironwork evoke the indoor/outdoor comfort of Northern Italy while the color palette and sheltered venues for year- round outdoor living embody the rural elegance of the Sonoma valley. The home enjoys views of a nature preserve and faces away from anticipated development. The exterior stone vestibule with open skylight welcomes visitors into the interior and creates inviting nooks on either side. Reclaimed, hand distressed wooden beams over the main living space celebrate the large volume of the great room, while dropped ceilings reinforce intimacy in the nooks. Passive House Retrofit
This unlikely candidate for the Passive House standard of efficiency began as a 1960’s house with uninsulated concrete slab. The home now uses the amount of energy it takes to run a hair dryer to heat the entire house. Washed in clean white, with a welcoming front porch and metal standing seam roof, this intuitive redesign centers on a bright, open-air courtyard that suits morning coffee for one and cocktails for a crowd. Inside, a tapering axis removes private rooms from view and rolling doors both optimize the space and separate uses. A 16-foot wide, sliding glass door fills the kitchen with light and maintains absolute silence, a testament to the extreme performance of super-insulation. Sonoma Wine Country 1
Comprised of two perpendicular bars atop a hill overlooking the village of Healdsburg, this home offers both ample social space ideal for entertaining and the privacy of a rural retreat. The taller section runs along the ridge of the hill and houses the home’s great room. Four oversized glass panels open dramatically on each side, transforming the space into an outdoor pavilion whose flush concrete floors extend into a poolside patio to the north and into a terrace featuring a fire pit to the south to offer comfortable outdoor areas for both hot and cool weather.
