Sonoma Passive House

Sonoma Residence

An entry courtyard, arching shapes, stone and ironwork evoke the indoor/outdoor comfort of Northern Italy while the color palette and sheltered venues for year- round outdoor living embody the rural elegance of the Sonoma valley. The home enjoys views of a nature preserve and faces away from anticipated development.

The exterior stone vestibule with open skylight welcomes visitors into the interior and creates inviting nooks on either side. Reclaimed, hand distressed wooden beams over the main living space celebrate the large volume of the great room, while dropped ceilings reinforce intimacy in the nooks. An oversized, beautifully crafted wood and steel chandelier defines the kitchen area.

Materials and technologies were thoughtfully selected to assure energy efficiency. Super-insulation between joists under the wooden floor and a specialized energy recovery ventilator customized to distribute axillary heat and cooling throughout the home’s two wings are key contributors to passive house level performance. The April energy bill was $17.00 and was the sole cost of energy to power the main residence, the guest house and pool; and to maintain charge of the owner’s Tesla.
