Terrace house

A three-story townhouse on the outskirts of Shanghai, nestled between neighboring units, opens only to the north and south on its deep site. The renovation project focused on distributing light and air evenly throughout. Situated in Sydney’s inner-city, the home is located amongst heritage-listed, heavily textural buildings. The design called for a robust urban home for a young family of four. In reconfiguring the rear of the home, the design sought to improve flow and flexibility by creating a series of courtyard spaces and a central open-air lightwell. Living and sleeping spaces were designed to frame views toward the surrounding heritage-listed textural brick walls, all the while creating opportunities for internal access to sunlight on a tight, south-facing property. The project of the house in Colares stared with a topographical research in mind, finding the most dramatic cliff between Cascais and Cabo da Roca, for a weekend house, on the west coast of Portugal, at the closest point to the Americas on European land. The site is located in the Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais, just between the famous Lighthouse of Cabo da Roca and the nearby Santuário da Peninha, it is part of a territory which is constellated by windmills and local production of wine. With elevated views of the river running through the valley below the site, the house was aptly named the River View House. Located in Johannesburg, South Africa, the site is nestled amidst a small forest of thorn trees and grassland. The compact, yet steep site presented a gradient of 1:1 which brought with it many challenges, but at the same time Gottsmann Architects saw many more opportunities. This set the tone for the project and so the concept began. Upon approaching the home on street level, a person is led past finely detailed Scandinavian timber screens opening up and leading one across a bridge suspended over water. Constrained by the long narrow site sandwiched between neighbouring properties, the design distills into the shifts of 3 volumes to shape light entering the spaces of this dwelling. Caption Caption Deprived of any side elevations to allow openings, the 3 cubes slides between the party walls to allow daylight into the middle of the house. Here, a double volume atrium space ensures light reaches the lower parts of the house from the skylights above. Private house is designed in a terrainy and picturesque location with a panoramic view of Vilnius city. Additional advantage of the lot is green surroundings near a public park. These qualities have become an inspiration for the house concept with panoramic windows facade and large terraces.   Natural and long lasting materials are used for exterior finishing. The stone facades are combined with emalit glass and large windows.   Form of the building is minimalistic and rational with an area of 180,97 sq. meters. This story of success began almost four years ago when a local real estate company and us decided to take the risk and develop a proposal in this site with very good location. The buildable area was due for a small apartment building, but the need of terrace houses was strong. The houses are organized in white & dark-grey volumes moving in and out to get the maximum sun light for main spaces and the small garden. All five owners bought their homes on the plan and had the opportunity to change partitions and finishes during the process.  More
