Goodwood Residence

Set amidst an enclave of black and white houses just off the prime Orchard/Scotts Road area, and against a verdant 20-hectare backdrop of greenery, the 210-unit Goodwood Residence is conceived on a macro scale as a breathing space - a rarity in high density urbanised Singapore - and an extension of the Goodwood Hill tree conservation area that it shares a boundary of 150m with. Articulated as two 12-storey L-shaped blocks, the 2.5-hectare development dialogues with the hill that it embraces and merges with in a language of openness and continuity made expressive by varying degrees of scale and privacy. All units are one apartment thick, with the blocks configured like boundary walls that define and enclose a series of courtyards that fi... More

Treehouse

This 200 square foot multipurpose play space in the Hudson Valley, called a ‘treehouse’ for its elevated position adjacent to a stand of trees, represents the smallest project that we’ve worked on and is a celebration of tectonic detail and craft. Despite the treehouse’s size, the density and juxtaposition of program is just as important here as it is in a masterplan, or complex public project. Hiding/escaping—one of the treehouse’s main uses—corresponds to the inhabitable polycarbonate box which nests into a the band of white cedar siding wrapping the structure. Surrounding this spatial core are volumes for play, and elevated above is a space for writing. One enters the treehouse via a custom climbing net, handmade in sections to achiev... More

Treehouse

Treehouse is a single family residence located on a park in Seattle, WA. Built on an inaccessible, steep slope lot, the project overcame significant design and construction challenges to create a unique home elevated in the trees. In response to both budget and zoning limitations, the house utilizes a compact 24’ x 30’ floor plate to create 1644 SF of living space on three levels. The upper levels of the house consist of a studio loft and an open plan living/kitchen/dining organized around a central skylight. The spaces overlap in section around the central skylight to create a sequence of interconnected spaces that are both open/closed to each other and to the park: living/dining look north into the trees through a wall of windows; kitc... The Polish Treehouse

From Warkworth, New Zealand to Cape Rozewie, Poland; the success of the Yellow Treehouse Restaurant (near Warkworth just north of Auckland), inspired Budizol S.A. (Budizol SpzooSKA Akcyjna) –a nationally respected Polish resort, housing and commercial development Company based in Wloclawek, Poland, to commission Pacific Environments Architects from Auckland, to design a Treehouse Restaurant for their new resort in Cape Rozewie. Budizol’s brief was to design an iconic landmark structure that added to the relaxed resort holiday feel, and put Rozewie on the map as a holiday destination. Treehouse

Kinlochlaich House is a listed building with its own beautiful gardens and a specialist garden plant centre set in a 18th century octagonal walled garden. Our brief was to design an eco treehouse to provide an extra special self-catering holiday experience. The treehouse sits amongst the trees in an old orchard and is perched on the edge of a ravine above a woodland burn. Designed to be contemporary and green the treehouse has a lime render finish on 'breathing' timber frame walls with arched windows and a Ballachulish slate roof complementing the historic house. Internally a whole oak tree supports the roof with circular stairs winding up to a gallery. Scottish oak was used extensively for the specialist joinery which was skillfu... More

Arruba

A relatively mundane set of requirements has been transformed into an exciting and vibrant treehouse. A one room space serves as bedroom, workroom and rumpus area, with a separate small bedroom in the concrete masonry tower. The red box ‘floats’ above the boat space, and is nestled amongst the branches of the existing pohutukawa. Squeezed between the sea and a steep cliff, the extension reads as a floating red cube relating to the existing and grounded yellow bach. Clad in extruded aluminum weatherboards, the cube has a crispness of form and colour, which could overpower the bay and neighbours if not for the fact that it is recessed behind the large pohutukawa boughs, creating the feeling of a tree-house from inside. The red reflects th... More
