The Kumbalangi Stories

Set against the enticing Kannamally backwaters in Kumbalangi, within the sprawling 89 cents of land, the beautiful residence is a picture painted right out of a dreamscape. Cocooned by the surrounding landscape, the majestic azure skies, and calm waters along the horizon against the verdant hues, the house is delicately designed to dematerialize into its backdrop. Spanning over 8200 square feet, home to a Dubai based banker, the house is designed to serve as a family holiday retreat in summers and a homestay all-round the year. Justin Sebastian Photography Context and Zoning Situated in a scattered residential setting, amidst the tropical greenery, abutted by an extensive water body on the west, the site is occupied mostly by tropica... Prim House

“REDEFINING A SUFFICIENT HOME FOR YOUNG HOMEOWNERS”   Prim House is a humble pet-and-plant-welcome home of a Phuket native homeowner in her mid-twenties planning to put down roots in her pricey hometown, the fourth most expensive city to live in South East Asia, by not getting into any debt.   Prim House represents a result of the empathic solution design to redefine and ratiocinate ‘a sufficient home’ of millennial homeowners: practical, manageable, and enjoyable.   Refashioned customary materials and technicalities, such as raw steel products, prefabricated air vents, and exposed structure, were chosen to prevent costly complexity and errors. The provident design thinking towards the sequential... More

Sunset View House

The site at the edge of a forest provides the verdant setting for the house. The brief for the house is to achieve the ultimate outdoor living with connections to the gardens from all rooms. The U-shape plan is built round a courtyard flanked by a lap pool on one side. The green landscape permeates all around and through the house. One of the gardens at the side which is at a higher level cascades down through the living room and courtyard, and out onto the garden beyond. This particular garden also ensures that the second-storey rooms enjoy vantage views of the greenery. Stretching the entire length of the site, the pool is similarly enveloped in a green strip planted with an assortment of trees and shrubs. The sculptural green landsc... More

Rebecca Road House

Formerly concealed at the bottom of the ramp, below the road level, the original house had a little presence or identity. The new house was raised to the street level, giving it a formal guest entrance at the front and a family entrance at the bottom of the driveway, beside the garage. The entry lobby overlooks the high volume semi-outdoor dining patio space which in turn, opens out seamlessly onto the swimming pool. To accentuate the tropical quality of this space, mechanically controlled glass louvres are used to let in daylight while sheltering from the rain. Ventilation is improved by a high-volume low-speed (HVLS) fan which delivers an extra breezy feel. The rear and one side boundary abut sizable plots of state land with dense vege... More

ROSTOV

The bathroom facilities have been converted into objects of desire, which is why we allow ourselves to be surprised by the high sophistication that can be achieved in some designs such as the suite from the interior designer Alexey Aladashvili for residential housing in Rostov, Russia.   Following an exotic line, dark and vibrant colours of the furniture and decorative coating were combined into aguamarine, blue and pink tones with the elegant XLIGHT LUSH White, wood and black-finished tiles.   Eclectic, bright and vibrant. In the room, the classics are reinvented by mixing textures and colours into an incredible pattern of carefully thought-out combinations.   The key to the selection of materials was the ease of maint... Through House

Nestled between a park and a hill, this house for a Catholic family is a vessel that channels views in from the front and rear, and where they meet in the middle, bridges them across.Flanked on 3 sides by other houses, it finds itself in between a small park in front and a hill further behind. The house uses this position to set up a distant dialogue between the 2 green spaces. In front, a U-shaped balcony cantilevers out above street level to channel the park into the interior where raintree canopies frame an intimate study. At the back, an open roof terrace cuts back the house massing above the rear neighbors to take in views of the forest hill. Between this 2 ends, internal rooms are pulled back to create a non-linear spatial passag... More

Ambient House

We create living breathing houses. This is the third experimental house in this series. It started from a story. During a conversation with our client, she said an interesting story about how her daughter, returning from school would tell her friends in the school bus, that the existing concrete house of the 1970s was not her home. From a child's perspective she could never relate her image of a home to that inert box. This narrative guided us in using the universal form of shelter as the image of her home, something which every child can relate to. For a 3000 sqft two storey house with all luxuries of contemporary living, this was our kind of interpretation of home. The pristine white was chosen in response to the tropical sun, as we wanted... Tube House

Situated on the outskirts of Bucharest, this elongated, low height house respects the treeline and the small vegetation typical for the Romanian plains. ▪ The interior layout differs from the traditional one - the rooms are set on both sides of a central axis that separates the day-time area from the night-time area. The bedrooms are placed on one side, and the shared spaces are situated on the opposite one. Instead of an simple hallway that allows access to various rooms, we decided to transform the corridor into the centrepiece of the house. We chose a sculptural concrete tube, perforated by skylights that create a dramatic effect as one passes from one side to the other. It is the main attraction of the composition, proving that technica... More
