The Ukrainian city of Dnipro has opened a renovated Uspenska Square, one of the oldest squares in the city. It was established more than 200 years ago. Dnipro is now an industrial city with over a million dwellers located 100 kilometers from the front line of the Russian-Ukrainian war. The reconstruction of Uspenska Square began in 2021, with 80% of the work completed, but in February 2022, the construction was forced to stop due to the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. But despite the ongoing war, the city is still trying to live: IDPs are coming here, and residents who left the city are returning. PS House densifies the inner block of an already dense San Francisco neighborhood (North Beach), while bringing an unexpected degree of spaciousness, natural light and connection with the outside to a small 1200sf urban house. It is a speculative project aimed at maximizing the potential of an existing dilapidated structure at the rear of the property, which was demolished but whose small footprint could not be expanded. Rush Wright Associates design establishes a unique, fresh vision for the much-loved Greville Street that revels in its edginess, and draws upon its fringe counter-culture and history of botanical display that has been a constant in the precinct. Akin to a haberdashery, the bespoke, craft-inspired furniture suite weaves throughout the streetscape and into Grattan Gardens. This palette of bright colours set against a braided ground plane recalls Greville Street’s urban groove, and evokes new and old textiles, fabrics, and fashion. The metal surfaces are done after researching how similar surfaces look on high quality photos. We added some dirt on the sidewalks to enhance realism and to avoid unnatural, homogenic looks.
