As part of a rezoning process in Vancouver, the construction of a 43-storey tower was put on the table. This skyscraper would replace an old office building and provide a large number of modern residencies. Alberni tower in Vancouver, Canada has been designed by the famous Japanese architectural office “Kengo Kuma & Associates”. The Oblates of Mary Immaculate founded St. Augustine School over one hundred years ago, at which time the school shared quarters with St. Augustine Church in a domed, three-storey, brick building located in the Kitsilanoneighbourhood of Vancouver. In 1951, the original school was demolished and replaced with what was to be a temporary, single-storey, wood-frame building. Sixty-four years later, a new three-storey, 300 student, 4,200 square metre, red brick-clad school and child care facility that features fifteen classrooms, a learning commons, multipurpose spaces and allowance for a new gymnasium occupies the compact site. The False Creek Energy Centre (FCEC) is an innovative Neighborhood Energy Utility (NEU) that produces thermal energy for the Southeast False Creek Development area including the 2010 Olympic Athletes Village. It is Vancouver’s first renewable energy based district heating system and also the first wastewater-powered heat-recovery system in North America. Similar to geo-exchange, thermal energy is captured from local untreated sewage by a heat pump and is transferred into the district loop where it is utilized by each building for space heating and domestic hot water production. This project was designed in collaboration with Nick Milkovich Architects and targeted to achieve LEED Platinum standards. The project was completed for interim use by VANOC as an Olympic facility in the Athletes Village. Along with a full-size gymnasium, three multi-purpose rooms, and fitness facilities, the new waterfront community centre will also provide a daycare, as well as boating and restaurant facilities, serving as a key community amenity for this new neighborhood evolving on the Southeast False Creek waterfront.
