The house is located on the border that separates a suburban development of single-family houses and a protected forest area. The main strategy followed in the project is to let the house take advantage of this special location and make the most of its double condition by merging them both; the wild nature of the forest on the one hand and the built or suburban environment on the other. The existing 3,400 SF [316 m2] brownstone townhouse is a landmark, located in Chelsea, NY. It will be gut-renovated and a 550 SF [52 m2] garden extension will be added with two floors and a roof terrace. The client, a fashion designer, is interested in a ‘textured’ and layered approach. The new rear extension is conceived as a light airy space which creates a filter to the garden space beyond, adding more light and better views. The new garden façade is a 3D folded steel and glass structure with reclaimed tropical palisander infill.  Make-up of a building of the 60s used as a business for the sale and exhibition of furniture and furnishings. Simple vertical and horizontal lines become the main theme of this restructuring, alternating in a game of verticality and linearity that brings the building back to life with a non-invasive restyling. The wide front wall with facing bricks remains almost unaltered from the intervention, on which large white sun bricks rise up, accentuating the verticality concealing the existing openings without eliminating the light. Located on one of the few lots in Dallas elevated enough to enjoy a view of the downtown skyline, the five-story Vertical House rises dramatically above the treetops to capture views of the surrounding gardens and the skyline beyond. Characterized by clean lines, sheer glass walls, and sculptural sun shades, this sharply-detailed house offers an intriguing counterpoint to the tropical ambiance of its forest-like setting. The open-air stage adds a new accent to the historic palace park of Grafenegg. The stage roof unfolds as sculptural motif and rises up like the crown of a great tree between the existing treetops. The reflections in the metal surface create the feeling of a “cloud-capp’d tower”, the “Wolkenturm”. Based on the fundamental acoustic principles of “what you see you hear”, affinities are explored between perspective and acoustic space. Earthworks and embankments have created artificial hills, into which stage and auditorium merge smoothly in topographical relief.
