Van Leesten Memorial Bridge

The new Van Leesten Memorial Bridge reworks abandoned freeway infrastructure (I-195) to connect five prominent neighborhoods and institutions within the city. Acting as a pedestrian center, the pedestrian bridge not only performs as a practical connector between regions, but also offers multiple programmatic interventions to encourage community connection and social engagement among city residents. The project captures a potential much larger than that of a pure connector. It leverages integrated program elements to serve as a mediator between urban and ecological spaces, allowing east and west to become a singular public space. Boathouse

Located in the San Juan Islands, the Boathouse stands foremost as a threshold between water and land, an idea it embraces literally by providing upland access to those arriving by boat or seaplane, and figuratively through its location and form. It straddles the elements, providing an entryway as well as a dramatic spot for a morning cup of coffee or a crab boil with the extended family. Andrew Pogue The Boathouse replaces a dilapidated, haphazardly constructed structure. This replacement of one built structure with another was done with a strategy aimed to naturalize the shoreline, removing the 400 square feet of concrete and creosote-coated piles from the water and replacing it with the 4 square feet of thin steel that supports the... Leonejsky lake strand in Zvezdny

This project’s main idea is to create a recreation zone which would link several residential quarters in an urban fringe community. The Leonejsky lake, encircled now by a new public space, made part of a grown over sand quarry quite recently. As a result of this transformation, its shores grew comfortable for strolls and relaxation, and the place itself merges natural territory patterns with features of a cozy city park.  Commissioned by The Ministry of landscape and public space development of Moscow region Commissioned by The Ministry of landscape and public space development of Moscow region Commissioned by The Ministry of landscape and public space development of Moscow region It’s important to mention t... The Edgewater Hotel Tiled Roof Deck

The 1750 sq. ft. rooftop patio at Seattle’s iconic Edgewater Hotel was falling into disrepair. An elastomeric deck coating that had only been down for 1 year had already failed. With failed waterproofing, they couldn’t be confident that the hotel would not sustain water damage over time. Plus, the overall look of the patio was off-putting to guests who wanted to enjoy the hotel’s view of Seattle’s waterfront. The hotel owners decided to give the rooftop patio an upgrade with an attractive and durable outdoor tile surface.  Since the failed coating was layered over a sleeper floor and a torch-on roofing product, it was going to be a big job.  They called the roof deck experts at Duradek Northwest to ensure... Noordbuurt

With a new form of front garden, the Noordbuurt blocks create opportunities for a communal street life, as an important quality of the urban living environment for families.  Negotiating the transition from the large-scale open space of the harbour and quay, to the intimacy of the domestic sphere, a new type of interstitial space has been designed for family apartments in Amsterdam IJburg. The Dutch cliché of the open curtains, allowing people to see into the interior of the home, is still often reflected in design schemes for ground floor living. The reality, however, is that from the moment of inhabitation windows at street level are mostly screened. To anticipate this need for privacy, while also enabling interaction with th... More

The rebirth of the Prague’s riverfront

The first part of the long-awaited revitalization of the Prague riverfront area called Náplavka is coming to completion, making it one of the most attractive public embankments in Europe. In autumn 2019, nineteen vaults on the Rašín and Hořejší Embankments will be put into use. Six will feature the biggest elliptical pivoting windows in the world, connecting the inner spaces with the riverfront area in a unique way, through the diagonal rotation of the five-meter wide glazed “lenses”. The other spaces will have distinct steel sculptural entrances. The area has gradually grown in popularity thanks to the program activation that began in 2008. One of its initiators was architect Petr Janda, the author of the architectural concept. The alm... More
