Marhûs, a timber dwelling designed by Lichtstad Architecten, is shaped by a deep engagement with craftsmanship and its surrounding landscape on the Frisian Lakes in the Netherlands. Named after the Frisian words “Mar” (lake) and “hûs” (house), the project reflects a strong connection to its waterside context, grounding the architecture in place and local identity. Positioned along the shore of a lake and flanked by two small harbors, the project features a mature garden, a reed-fringed quay, and an extended jetty. The project’s starting point was its integration with the natural area of the Colares pine forest. Located in Mangmi Village in Yangpyeong, South Korea, the project is situated in the valley where three mountains meet. The site sitting in the deep mountains retains a calm, peaceful vibrance. After retirement, the client couple have been living there growing fruit trees. They asked for a community facility and a glasshouse along with a campsite. The most important feature in the site is the forest. Trees rooted down there for a long time have memories of the place more than anything.  Jinbo Choi Birch trees are widely distributed around the world. The yoga-retreat building’s design is inspired by the local traditional building technology, the classical elements (the 4 elements) and the landscape. The building is a dialogue between the tradition, expressed with stone-made walls, providing stability (Earth) and the free modern shape with its core lifted and opens to all sides( Air).
