Brasília is the only city dating from the 20th century that has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With its range of public buildings, the “ideal city” built between 1956 and 1960 is one of the icons of the Modern style. In this context gmp Architects, in cooperation with schlaich bergermann und partner (sbp), produced the design of the Brasília national stadium for Castro Mello Arquitetos (São Paulo). It was constructed in the place of the former Mané Garrincha stadium. This stadium design was based on the idea of creating a simple but highly efficient stadium which also makes reference to the special location, to the fascination and natural diversity of forms in the tropical rainforest. Designed for 44,400 spectators, the stadium is located at the central traffic axis that links the airport with the inner city. The new building was integrated into a sports park with Sambadrome, field and track facilities, multi-purpose halls and an aquatic center. The arena’s design is unique. Its façade and roof are integrated and made up of 20 petal-shaped modules, designed to be higher on one of the stadium's sides, giving the impression that the sand dunes – which are common in the region – are moving. The design also enables more ventilation and light to come into the stadium. The petal-shaped structures of the roof are made of steel trusses, covered on the outside with aluminum tiles, with thermal and acoustic insulation. Internally, they are coated with a PVC prestressed membrane. The parts are joined by translucent polycarbonate, which allows light to come through. The ITAIPAVA ARENA FONTE NOVA is a great example for multifunctional use of a stadium. The stadium is not only an exceptional venue for football matches and the upcoming World Cup 2014, but also offers an amazing space in the southern opening for various events, such as concerts and parties. FLEXIBILITY AND NATURAL VENTILATION The unusual Arena´s bowl footprint, with four open corners, is the result of a design strategy allowing the solution of many issues, such as Arena capacity flexibility after 2014 Word-Cup and local environment. Since the pitch needs to be built in a strict North/South orientation, to avoid glare on cameras during TV matches transmission, to optimize the natural wind flow and ventilation, the bowl corners were chopped out and substituted by landscaped open areas.
