AY Architects is a London-based studio committed to design excellence and the delivery of quality buildings in the educational, cultural and residential sectors.
We make innovative and sustainable architecture through intimately engaging with our clients and collaborators and by following design processes that focus on research, iterative modelling and experimentation. We pay attention to craft, economy, and the unique cultural context of our projects—whether small or large, permanent or temporary.
We are experienced in the delivery of excellent school buildings, having completed six educational buildings and building extensions in the last five years. In 2013 our self-initiated Montpelier Community Nursery won a RIBA National Award and the Stephen Lawrence Prize for the best building in the UK constructed under £1 million. Despite its modest size, the building was also mid-listed for the 2013 Stirling Prize and was Highly Commended by Camden Design Awards.
We are deeply interested in the public purpose of architecture and its connection to art and the city. We have designed a range of exhibitions, public squares and installations. Our pavilion House of Flags, commissioned by the Greater London Authority, was erected on Parliament Square and enjoyed by millions during London’s Olympic Games.
We are consistently producing beautiful homes. Dartmouth Park House has won a RIBA London Award, been nominated for the House of the Year Award, and shortlisted for the Stephen Lawrence Prize. Ruskin Park House has received a ‘Don’t Move Improve Award’ for the Best Use of Concrete from New London Architecture.
AY Architects have lectured and exhibited internationally, including at the Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York, University of Quebec, the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland, École spéciale d’architecture in Paris, CEPT University in Ahmedabad, TU Delft, the Royal Institute of British Architects, Building Centre and Royal Academy in London, the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens, and the 15th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale.
In 2014 we were Building Design Small Project Architect of the Year Finalists while Yeoryia was nominated for the Emerging Woman Architect of the Year Award.
