Founded in 1963, the Firm made its mark internationally in late 1960s when it was commissioned to master plan and design Mei Foo Sun Chuen, a comprehensive community development for a planned population of 80,000. This project was a pioneering housing development for Hong Kong and internationally, not only because of its size and scope, but also its unique planning concepts. This was followed by similar large scale community development projects such as TaikooShing and Chi Fu Fa Yuen in Hong Kong.
Apart from a large portfolio of residential developments, the Firm also involved in major hotel, commercial and institutional projects, covering a broad range of disciplines, such as the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, the Redevelopment of the Hong Kong University (Phase One), and the Hong Kong Park, which is considered to be one of the Firm’s signature projects. In the early 70s, the firm established its offices in Dallas, Texas and Atlanta, Georgia, completing such projects as the Medical City in Dallas and the Atlanta Hilton Hotel and Office Building Complex in Atlanta.
In the early-80s, the Firm was possibly the first Hong Kong architectural practice to enter the Mainland China market. The Firm, along with the rapid growth of China’s economy, became more and more established in the Mainland, and branches were set up in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Chongqing. The Firm also founded Zhong Tian Wong Tung International Engineering Design Consultants Co., Ltd., a joint-venture Grade A Design Institute in China.
Wong Tung’s success had been due to its constant strive for professionalism, design creativity.
