Architecture by circulation between the nature and people Aqua metropolis Osaka 2009 Waterfront Bunkaza Cultural Plaza
The purpose of this event is re-finding the history of Osaka where have been developing the tied relationship between water and to rethinking the worth of the water front of Osaka by participation of many civic. “Waterfront Bunkaza Cultural Plaza” was designed for the space where more than 160 teams by artist can act in the sandbank Nakanoshima as main place. the plaza is consisted by “place for making ”where is workshop’s space for making something following by each concept, ”place for playing” which is for enjoying short program for a day and ”place for talking and watching “where is space for lecture and dance and performances space.
DESIGNING ARCHITECTURE BY REGENERATING NEGLECTED BAMBOO FOREST (BAMBOO FOREST)
The site is between Tosabori River and Dojima river where are connected with the biggest lake Biwa in Japan. There are many problem which likes changing of environment and ecology around the lake Biwa. Problem of neglected bamboo forest is one of problems around Lake BIWA. There was the neglected bamboo forest was on river Inukami which is connected with lake Biwa. The bamboo had planted by Japanese on around their territory to create many things for their life, but the use is decreasing by increasing use of oil product. Many bamboos which lost needs form people have eroded ecology around countryside become very big environmental problem. The Bamboo forest in 1400m2 was built by using bamboo near our life style to solve the problem with people’s hand. The future of bamboo is weighted down by force from outside. so we studied many form by the feature of bamboo. As the result of the studies, we found the structure which is the courved bamboo with bamboo’s mesh on it. Connect each bamboo giving a weight on the bamboo connected on basement in ground. We did not use concrete basement but used steel one which is consisted with plate and bars on slicked on plate. The structure is consisted of the balance between the recitative force from curved bamboo and the weight from messed bamboo in 600 spans. There is tension ring to solve the force to outside from curved bamboo on the foot of curved bamboo. this structure is not used hardware, it was just used wire line and rope by natureal materiasl. The bamboo is really close to people but, the structure by curved bamboo is not popular so, we tried to research and make real model so many time to know the real disposition to generate form and details. on the process of building bamboo forest, we planed workshop by 170 peoples. This bamboo forest was used for activity space for artist and changing the figure day by day in the event term. After the event the demolished structure was consented for making paper and used as energy by biomass. This is the primitive space by human power with low technology with the special feature of natural materials called bamboo existed close to our life for long time.
REUSABLE TEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE (COLLINS HUT) The 6 huts for artist’s activity was designed by reusable method for short time. As the result, it was adapted Collins grid consisted by triangle and right square. Compare with form in rigid grid, the form in Collins system has gap between spaces in right wavelength. I thought this kind of structural system for the park in natural condition with big trees. All wooden panels for wall, floor and roof were built in factory in 2400 for transportation system. and the material are structural panel and rib from timbers from forest thinning from Wakayama prefecture The structural method which fixes each part was adapted, it is easy for the structural method to construct, demolish, rebuild for after the festival at another places. These huts was applied for second hand, a part of parts of one hut was founded by second user. This Collins hut will comes and goes most unexpectedly.
ARCHITECTURE OVER THE ENVIRONMENT OF WATER FRONT（FOLDED-PLATE HUT） “Bunkaza Theater” was planted for making situation that people can close to water more in difference of administrative system by overhanging form toward river. It is impossible for the big form to land on water, so we put basement on park side and make beam with 9m. The material for this theater is the same as Collins hut, timber from Kisyu area. Wooden sandwich panel method was adapted for this structure. The beautiful reflection from water in the river shine on the folded ceiling like folding paper . There were many event like lecture performances and live event happen with this kind of natural phenomenon.
TREAT NATURE BY ARCHITECTURE Aqua metropolis Osaka was the nice opportunity to know and rethink the relationship between people and nature. Environment around us were taking many damages. The important point is not easy idea for ecology but real attitude toward environment.
The architecture has potential to change and treat the nature. I would like to continue to develop the idea for the thing what only architecture can do in the era when everything is too much and overflowing and being consuming too much.
