HUGLGASSE

The pavilion on the site of the former Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Hospital was constructed 1899 and is under preservation order. It was reconstructed to an elementary school with focus on special needs education.

Due to the preservation of the building, the design focuses on sensitive changes to keep and restore the original organization and appearance: the original circuit around the two atriums was set free again, the atriums were reorganized to outdoor spaces for the students, and the new classrooms are organized along the outside facades.

Original elements of the facade were restored and closed windows were opened again. The entire building was modified to up to date fire protection and accessible standards.

The newly used colors and materials harmonize with the original building, the protected staircase and railing as well as the original cement tiles were preserved and gently restored.
