Cozy Wine Retreat

A simple contemporary design for a small wine bar-shop with the concept of enhancing wine culture through tastings of a regularly updated selection of wines by the glass from around the world in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

The bar is located in the courtyard of one of Belgrade's bustling central streets. It originally featured a mezzanine, a glass staircase, and a column that the owners, a sommelier with extensive wine expertise and his wife, wished to integrate into the new interior. We aimed to preserve and highlight the coziness and privacy of this space.

The primary lighting is focused on the bar area. The counter, with a practical dark countertop and an unusual front made of illuminated cork tiles framed at the bottom with a brass baseboard, was designed so that all joint seams are hidden. The backsplash of the kitchen workspace is decorated with small-format handmade ceramic tiles in warm honey tones, while the first-floor flooring features a patterned cream-colored terrazzo.

Under the high ceiling above the bar is a mezzanine with intimate tables and spacious shelves for horizontally displaying wine in an industrial chic aesthetic. The ceiling was stripped of its traditional finish made of natural reed and plaster, revealing the rhythmic pattern of the brutal overhead structure and adding a sense of volume to the space above the visitors. The mezzanine floor is laid with plywood tiles featuring thin seams filled with sealant, a solution that prevents deformation due to the unstable base of the lightweight steel structure. Additionally, the wood enhances acoustic comfort, a critical aspect of an interior that encourages conversation.

The wall, graphically intersected by the airy staircase, features an abstract mural depicting a collective image of a wine terroir by the talented artist duo @hoo_do. The large earthy and clay-like shapes, splashes of contrasting inclusions, and fine terracotta lines evoke a sensory, associative experience of wine.

The high window sills of the large display windows have been ergonomically adapted into seating with steel footrests, increasing the seating area for guests and creating diverse scenarios for informal gatherings.

A warm, moderately contrasting color palette and soft lighting create an elegant, relaxing, and somewhat intimate atmosphere with a focus on wine.
