Optegra Eye Health Care London is a world-class private ophthalmic hospital based in the Harley Street district of Central London, UK.Set within a conservation area and bound by the fabric of two conjoined but divergent period buildings, the challenge was to accommodate the characteristics of a modern, patient centric hospital. The solution resulted in an elegant and coherent single space, exemplifying clinical excellence and reminiscent of historical detailing.
Arranged over six floors, the hospital offers ophthalmic consultancy services and surgery all under one roof. Facilities include a dedicated refractive suite, spacious consultant rooms, two operating theatres and a stage-one recovery room, a recovery suite with private patient pods, and a dedicated floor for staff including a south facing roof terrace.
Patients visiting the eye hospital typically remain conscious throughout their clinical procedures, and consequently have a heightened awareness of their environment. In response, the design creates a calm and reassuring space;using high quality materials, the extensive use of glass, and a warm tonal palette to from an open, welcoming and luxurious environment.
Private recovery pods are defined by internal glass screens, which filter natural daylight, but also enable discretion and dignity through the integration of beautiful manifestations and interstitial blinds. By manipulating light, reflection and transparency the design creates a perception of space that changes throughout the day.
The classic, yet contemporary interior is supplemented through the extensive use of high quality art, which makes a significant contribution to the quality of the patient environment. Incorporating motion artworks, patients are distracted by playful images, such as birds and butterflies at a time when reading may not be an option due to their eye condition.
For consultants, the hospital’s design offers clinical efficiency, with consultancy and surgical facilities all under one roof, meaning they, and their clients save time whilst feeling comfortable in a familiar, easy to navigate environment.
